Turn Structure Revealed: 4 Phases — Official Gen Con 2026 Playmat Also Shows All 8 Board Zones
At Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis (July 30 – August 2 local time), attendees of Bandai’s official Content Creator event received an official NARUTO Card Game playmat, and creator Vampyr posted photos of it on X. The mat is printed with zone names and rule text, giving us our first look at the previously unannounced turn structure and board layout.
This article is a reading of photos of an official Bandai print item (the playmat) distributed at the venue. It is not a formal announcement on the official site or in a rulebook, so names and specs could change before release. With that caveat, here is what the mat shows, cross-checked against the card text and official site information already published.
Turn structure: a 4-phase system, revealed for the first time
The mat prints the turn order with arrows:
Refresh Phase → Draw Phase → Main Phase → End Phase
- RefreshRefresh Phase
- DrawDraw Phase
- MainMain Phase
- EndEnd Phase
That is a four-phase turn: Refresh → Draw → Main → End. As of the July 29 reveal, the turn structure (phase names and order) was unannounced, so this fills in the game’s backbone.
It also connects to card text we have already seen:
- The “Main” in [Activate: Main] most likely refers to this Main Phase
- The name Refresh Phase suggests this is where rested cards return to active, but the mat does not describe what each phase actually does. How it relates to the Leader’s [Recovery] effect (turning all your Chakra face up) also awaits the official rules
Eight board zones — including an Exclusion Area not on the official site
Each player’s side of the mat has the following eight zones:
| Zone (as printed) | What it holds |
|---|---|
| CHARACTER AREA | Where Characters are played. Has printed rule text (see below) |
| SUPPORT AREA | Where Support cards are set face down. Has printed rule text (see below) |
| CHAKRA AREA | A wide zone for Chakra cards, separate from the deck |
| DECK | Deck placement |
| TRASH | Discard pile |
| LEADER CARD | Leader card placement |
| SUMMON CARD | Summon card placement |
| EXCLUSION AREA | A new zone not mentioned anywhere on the official site. Function unannounced |
The standout is the EXCLUSION AREA. This is the first confirmation that a “removed” zone exists separately from the Trash. Nothing has been announced about which cards or effects use it, but its existence — an unrecoverable area paired against Trash-recursion cards like Gamabunta (N-005), which summons from the Trash — is worth keeping in mind for future deck building.
The mat also confirms on the board what the game system first look laid out from the setup lists: Chakra, the Summon card, and the Leader each get dedicated zones independent of the deck.
Two rule sentences printed on the mat
Beyond zone names, two zones carry printed rule notes in English.
Characters cannot attack the turn they are played
Characters cannot attack on the turn they were played.
This single sentence in the CHARACTER AREA officially confirms “summoning sickness.” It had only been inferred from the reminder text on Ino Yamanaka (N-011)‘s [Rush] (“This card can attack on the turn it was played”) — now it is backed by explicit rule text on the mat.
Face-down Supports are capped at 5
You may set up to 5 cards face-down. You cannot set another card if there are already 5.
These two sentences in the SUPPORT AREA establish that you can have at most 5 Support cards set face down, and cannot set another while at 5. The face-down cap is a brand-new number. It also lines up with the official English site’s “Use Chakra to activate face down support cards,” sharpening the picture of how Supports work: set face down, then pay Chakra to activate.
Still unknown
- What each phase actually does (what refreshes, how many cards you draw, and so on)
- Which cards and effects use the Exclusion Area
- The detailed procedure for attacks and Support activation
- First-player/second-player differences (and how they relate to [Recovery]‘s “from your second turn onward”)
- Whether this playmat’s zones and rule text match the final retail version
Gen Con runs through August 2 local time, and more information is likely to surface from demo participants — we will report as soon as anything is confirmed. Known cards are in the card database, keyword text in the keyword roundup, and all confirmed facts on the timeline.
