Choji Akimichi doubles power — the only multiplication in the revealed pool, and it lifts the same 17 cards that "+5" does

This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.

This is the fifth entry in our one-card analysis series. Today: Choji Akimichi.

In yesterday’s piece on Ino Yamanaka (N-011), this was one of the two cards Ino names by name. We read the other one — Shikamaru Nara (N-008) — the same day, which makes Choji the last of the three Team 10 cards.

Read as the main subject, though, the Ino-Shika-Cho angle quickly gets pushed aside, because Choji’s text does something no other revealed card does.

What this is based on: Choji’s card face comes from high-resolution scans of the English-version demo card handed out at Gen Con 2026, posted by an X user. Neither the official site nor the official X account has published this card face, and no Japanese version of the text exists. The card number is cut off in the scans and remains unconfirmed, as does the first entry of the trait line. Because the source is not an official one, this article carries no quoted card image. Tallies are taken over the 38 entries in our card database — 24 with legible effect text, 20 Characters with legible stats. The official rulebook and card list are still unpublished, and anything speculative is marked as speculation.

The effect text runs two lines.

[Support] Expansion Jutsu [Quick] Choose 1 Character: Summon this card, and the chosen card’s power is doubled during this turn.

The first line is the [Support] header plus a jutsu name. No Japanese name for this technique has been published — our card database records a reference rendering taken from the corresponding technique in the original manga. As set out in the piece counting the 12 Support jutsu names, only one Japanese jutsu name has ever been confirmed on an official card face, and that is still the case.

2. Doubling is the only multiplication revealed so far

Searching all 38 revealed entries for effects that move a power value returns three cards.

CardWordingTarget
N-001Naruto Uzumaki N-001power +3 during this turn1 Character
N-011Ino Yamanaka N-011power +5 / damage +1 during this turnyour three Team 10 cards
Choji Akimichipower is doubled during this turn1 Character

Two additions, one multiplication. Three further cards mention “10 or more power” as a condition (see below), but none of them changes a value.

That single multiplication matters, because addition helps small cards most and multiplication helps big ones most. Here is where that difference actually lands in the revealed pool.

3. How many Characters reach “10 or more power”

As set out in the piece on [Rush] and the power-10 line, three revealed texts use “10 or more power” as a condition.

Measured against that line, here are the 20 revealed Characters with legible stats (Leaders excluded).

Characters reaching 10 or more power (of the 20 revealed)
Already at 10+ all EX Characters3cards
With N-001's "+3"10cards
With N-011's "+5"17cards
With Choji's "doubled"17cards

“+5” and “doubled” land on exactly the same 17 cards. That is not a coincidence.

  • To reach 10 with “+5”, a card needs a base power of 5 or more
  • To reach 10 by doubling, a card needs a base power of 5 or more

Seventeen of the revealed 20 sit at power 5 or above, so the two effects cover an identical set. The three that miss out are identical too: the power-4 cards Karin N-010, Orochimaru and Sasuke Uchiha (Chidori). Power 4 becomes 9 with +5 and 8 when doubled — neither reaches the line.

“+3”, by contrast, needs a base power of 7 or more, which drops the count to 10. In the revealed pool, +3 sits a clear step below both +5 and doubling.

4. The gap opens at the top of the curve

Identical coverage, very different numbers.

Base powerCardsAfter “+5”After doubling
4398
551010
621112
731214
831316
911418
1021520
1111622

Power 5 is the crossover. At exactly 5, both effects produce 10; above it doubling wins, below it +5 wins.

The row that stands out is Jugo N-019 at POW 9: 14 with +5, but 18 when doubled. Putting the multiplication on the highest base power among revealed non-EX Characters is the biggest swing available in the revealed pool.

And Choji can apparently target himself — the text reads “choose 1 Character”, with neither “your” nor “another” attached. POW 7 becomes 14. As set out in does it say “your”?, revealed cards consistently omit “your” when an effect targets a Character on the field, which means doubling an opponent’s Character is possible as written. You would rarely want to, but nothing in the text forbids it.

Unconfirmed: Nothing states whether a temporary power increase counts toward the “10 or more power” check in [Summon Requirements]. That question is still open from both the Gamabunta piece and the Ino piece. If it counts, Expansion Jutsu is a launchpad for EX Characters; if it does not, it is a one-attack damage boost.

5. What happens when “doubled” and “+5” overlap

This is the question we left hanging at the end of yesterday’s article. When Team 10 assembles and both Choji’s doubling and Ino’s +5 land in the same turn, the order of application changes the result.

Using Choji himself (POW 7):

Final power by order of application (Choji, POW 7)
  1. Base power 7
  2. Double first → 14then +5 makes 19
  3. Add first → 12then doubling makes 24

Nineteen versus twenty-four — a five-point swing decided purely by sequencing, which makes this far from a trivia question.

Speculation from here: most TCGs settle this either by “apply effects in the order they resolved” or by “apply all addition before all multiplication”. The NARUTO Card Game has never addressed the point officially. We are waiting on the rulebook.

Note also that Ino’s +5 hits “all of your Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara and Choji Akimichi”, while Choji’s doubling hits “1 Character” — so the only cards that can receive both are the three Team 10 members.

6. Only two revealed cards carry [Quick]

The [Quick] header on this effect appears on just two revealed cards.

Even the sentence structure matches: “Choose 1 Character: Summon this card, and the chosen card … during this turn.”

What matters here is that nothing official explains when a [Quick] Support may be played. [During Your Opponent’s Attack] and [During Your Main] name their own window; [Quick] does not.

Speculation from here: in other TCGs, a “quick” label usually means a wide window that includes the opponent’s turn. If that holds, Expansion Jutsu could be used to spike a defender’s power mid-combat. But that is an inference from other games, and the NARUTO Card Game has never said so.

For the record, four revealed cards contain the phrase “Summon this card” (Choji, Shikamaru Nara N-008, Karin N-010, Suigetsu Hozuki N-021). As covered in reading face-down Supports, cards of this type appear to stay on the field as Characters rather than going to the trash after firing. That is the core of Choji’s two-jobs-in-one-card value.

7. HP 3, the lowest single figure revealed

Finally, the stat line. HP 3 is the outright lowest among the 20 revealed Characters with legible stats.

HP distribution across the 20 revealed Characters
  • HP 8 or more 7cards(35%)
  • HP 4 5cards(25%)
  • HP 5-6 5cards(25%)
  • HP 7 2cards(10%)
  • HP 3 1cards(5%)

That does not make Choji a weak card. Lining up the eight cost-1 Characters by power plus HP:

Six total 10 and two total 11 — the cost-1 Characters look built from roughly one budget, with only the split between the two numbers changing. Choji takes that budget of 10 and splits it 7:3, the most lopsided ratio on the list. Of the six cards totalling 10, he is the only one at power 7, and the only one at HP 3.

Speculation from here: a higher base power gets more out of a multiplication, as sections 3 and 4 showed. Power 7 and a self-targetable doubling effect fit together, and HP 3 looks like the price. But the official side has never described how stats are set, and the sample is only eight cards.

As shown in the full stat rundown, revealed Character DMG values run 1 on 11 cards, 2 on seven and 3 on two. HP 3 falls to three attacks at DMG 1, or two at DMG 2.

8. Still unknown

  • The card number (cut off in the scans; Team 10 sits at N-008 and N-011, but nothing confirms Choji’s)
  • The Japanese jutsu name (the English reads “Expansion Jutsu”; our Japanese rendering is a reference only)
  • The first trait (only the tail of “Taijutsu” is legible in the English scans)
  • When a [Quick] Support can be played (section 6)
  • The order of application between “doubled” and “+5” (section 5)
  • Whether a temporary power increase counts for [Summon Requirements] (section 4)
  • How doubling handles edge values (no power-0 card has been revealed, but the rule is unstated)
  • The product this card is printed in

All of it waits on the official rulebook and card list. We will update the card database entry and this article as soon as anything is confirmed.

Summary

  • Choji Akimichi is a Character card at R rarity: CHAKRA 1 / DMG 1 / POW 7 / HP 3. HP 3 is the outright lowest of the 20 revealed Characters with legible stats
  • Three revealed cards move a power value, and only Choji’s is a multiplication. The other two (N-001’s +3, N-011’s +5) add
  • Reaching 10 or more power: 10 cards with +3, 17 with +5, 17 with doubling. The tie exists because both require a base power of 5 or more
  • The gap shows on the bigger cards. Jugo at POW 9 becomes 14 with +5 but 18 when doubled, and Choji himself goes 7 to 14
  • [Quick] appears on just two revealed cards, with no official explanation of its window. Being one of the four “Summon this card” effects, it reads as staying on the field after firing
