Reading the Gen Con Demo Decklists — Mirrored Design, Trait Density, and What They Teach About Deckbuilding

This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.

Between the venue photos and the high-resolution scans, more than twenty demo card faces from Gen Con 2026 are now readable. Covering it as news meant counting how many new cards turned up. But once a list fills in, a different question gets interesting:

What is this deck actually built out of, and how?

Demo decks are tuned for first-time players and won’t match retail constructed. Even so, how roles are distributed and how synergies are made to work is a fine specimen for checking deckbuilding fundamentals against something real. This article re-sorts the confirmed card faces through a deckbuilding lens.

Ground rules for this article: the sources are the Gen Con 2026 demo cards (SAMPLE watermark, NOT FOR SALE) and official site sample cards already entered in our card database. Only English-language faces were confirmed. This is also not a complete decklist — unphotographed cards and copy counts remain unknown, and no official card list has been published.

What we can see — the Naruto side and the Sasuke side

Sorted by Leader color and traits. Only figures actually legible are listed; anything cut off in the images is shown as ”—”.

Note that which deck each card belonged to has not been officially announced. The split below is our own inference from the trait lines ({Hidden Leaf Village} and friends versus {Uchiha Clan} / {The Taka}).

Observation 1: the design is relentlessly mirrored

Put the two sides side by side and the same roles line up almost one for one.

That two of the Legendary Sannin, Jiraiya and Orochimaru, carry literally the same effect says it all. The demo decks are built to be symmetrical so that either side gives a new player the same experience — an entirely sensible choice for tutorial sessions.

The interesting part is where mirrored cards diverge in the details. Compare the two support-negation cards:

Same “counterspell,” but the resource you spend differs. Kakashi pays up front and in full out of the Leader’s LIFE 15; Shisui pays in instalments, by giving up resource recovery until the end phase of the next turn. Identical role, different character via the cost — a textbook design move, right there in a demo deck (the two costs compared).

Correction (August 13, 2026): This article originally described Kotoamatsukami as stopping your opponent from turning Chakra face-up (“they pay the price”). The card face reads “you cannot turn your CHAKRA face-up” — the target is the Chakra of the player who activated it. It is the cost of the negation, not disruption, and we apologise for the error. The role labels in the lists above have been changed from “Disruption” to “Negation” accordingly (the card database entry has said “your Chakra” correctly since it was created).

Observation 2: trait density is what makes the EX summon requirements work

The most constructed-looking piece of the demo list is the summon requirement on EX Characters. EX cards state plainly that they “cannot be played normally” — they arrive only when a condition is met.

EX CharacterSummon requirement
N-014EX Sasuke N-014Trash 1 of your Characters and 1 of your Characters with the {The Taka} trait
N-003EX Naruto N-003Trash 1 of your Characters and 1 of your Characters with power 10 or more
N-005Gamabunta N-005Trash 1 of your Characters with power 10 or more
N-022Manda N-022Trash 1 of your Characters (no further condition — the lightest confirmed)

Look back at the Sasuke side with that in mind and the setup is obvious. {The Taka} is carried by Karin N-010, Jugo N-019, Suigetsu Hozuki N-021, plus the Leader and EX Sasuke himself. Three Characters in the confirmed pool carry it, and all of them are cheap.

Then Jugo’s (N-019) [When attacking] reveals your top card and summons it if it’s “Sasuke Uchiha” or a non-EX {The Taka} card. The more {The Taka} you run, the more often Jugo hits, too — the trait does double duty.

The takeaway: if you run a powerful conditional card, the count of cards that satisfy the condition is part of the same decision. Not “do I play EX Sasuke,” but “how many {The Taka} do I need for EX Sasuke to show up reliably.” That’s exactly the “parts budget for your win condition” idea from deckbuilding fundamentals, and it runs straight into probability and mulligans. The Naruto side’s “power 10 or more” clause works the same way — it is surely no accident that Minato N-007 (power 8 with a conditional boost) and Ino N-011 (+5 power) share the deck with it.

One caution: card text names only two traits directly — {The Taka} and {Uchiha Clan}; every other synergy calls out card names instead (we counted them in the full trait index). More traits does not automatically mean more synergy.

Observation 3: cost bands and stats form a clean staircase

Lay the legible numbers out and the power level stratifies by cost band.

BandPOW rangeHP rangeExamples
Cost 14–74–6Shikamaru, Kakashi, Karin, Suigetsu, Shisui, Choji, Sakura, Hinata
Cost 24–74–7Rasengan Naruto, Jiraiya, Chidori Sasuke, Orochimaru
Cost illegible5–97–8Minato, Ino, Itachi, Jugo
EX Characters8–117–11EX Naruto, EX Sasuke, Gamabunta, Manda

Only the EX Characters occupy a clearly separate band — power 8+, HP 7+, DMG 2–3. Among ordinary Characters, only Minato (8/8), Itachi (8/8) and Jugo (9/7) reach up into it.

The other thing to notice: cost 1 and cost 2 barely differ in POW/HP. Cost-2 Chidori Sasuke is POW 4 / HP 5 — weaker than cost-1 Kakashi Hatake at POW 7 / HP 4.

What we can read into this (speculation): on the evidence so far, cost buys effect strength, not stats. The cost-2 group (Rasengan, Chidori, the flame bullet, the snake hands) are all board wipes or double KOs, while the cost-1 group handles single removal, defense and pumps. Bear in mind, though, that whether the printed cost number pays to field the Character or to activate it as a face-down support is still unconfirmed, so this reading waits on the official rules.

Observation 4: the role split leans hard on removal

Counting the support effects by role, the confirmed pool breaks down like this:

Demo deck support effects by role (confirmed)
Removal5
Development4
Pump3
Board wipe2
Negation2
Defense2
Life gain1
  • Removal (KO or bounce an opposing Character): Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Hinata, Sakura, EX Sasuke = 5
  • Board wipe: Rasengan Naruto, Chidori Sasuke = 2
  • Negation (negate an opposing support; both charge the cost to their own controller): Kakashi, Shisui = 2
  • Defense (stop an attack, grant immunity): Shikamaru, Suigetsu = 2
  • Development (put extra Characters into play): Gamabunta, Manda, Jugo, EX Naruto = 4
  • Pump (raise power/damage): Choji, Ino, Leader Naruto = 3
  • Life gain: Karin = 1

Removal is the thickest slice at seven cards — and most of it triggers on [During your opponent’s attack], i.e. as a reaction to being attacked. Flipping a set support on the opponent’s turn — the Chakra-and-face-down bluff game — is clearly meant to be the core of the experience, and the role split backs that up.

Meanwhile, nothing here draws cards except Leader Sasuke’s [Activate: Main]. Within the demo’s scope, the design pushes you to fight over the board rather than accumulate resources.

A checklist for reading any decklist

The demo decks yield a method that will still apply when the retail card list drops:

  1. Lay the same roles side by side — the differences between mirrored cards are where each card’s identity lives
  2. Count the enablers, not just the payoff — EX summon requirements, named traits, power thresholds
  3. Sort POW/HP by cost band — it tells you whether cost is buying stats or effects
  4. Bucket the support effects by role and count them — the skew is the deck’s personality
  5. Count the timing keywords — cards you spend on your turn versus cards you hold up on theirs

The limits of this reading

To be explicit about what we don’t know:

  • Copy counts are entirely unknown. How many of each card is included — and whether the demo deck is even 50 cards — is unconfirmed
  • Some cards were never photographed. Character numbers N-002, 015, 017, 018 and 020, among others, remain unseen
  • Some costs are illegible (Minato, Ino, Itachi, Jugo)
  • Only English faces exist so far; effect text here follows the English printings
  • A demo deck is not a constructed deck. These lists are tuned for tutorial play and won’t reflect release balance

We’ll update this article when the official card list and rulebook arrive. Revealed cards are in the card database, keyword notations in the keyword index, and confirmed facts in chronological order on the timeline.
