Reading S-001, the Summon Card — the official site calls it "the card you need to summon Characters to the field", yet 9 of the 20 revealed Characters never go through it

This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.

This is part of our single-card analysis series. Today: the S-001 Summon Card.

It is the plainest card revealed so far, and the one every single player uses. You do not choose it, you do not build around it: the moment a battle starts, one copy is sitting on each side of the table. And it carries exactly one line of text.

Read it closely and you find that the official description and the revealed card texts do not line up neatly.

1Copies prepared at the start of a battleSeparate from the 50-card deck
1 lineLength of the effect textNo cost or stat fields
9 of 20Cards with a route that bypasses S-001Characters and EX with readable text

Basis for this article: the card face is read from the image in the 物販情報 (merchandise) section of the Japanese 先行体験会 page, published October 13, 2026. The quotations about the card’s role come from the official About the NARUTO Card Game page (both checked October 19, 2026). The official rulebook and card list are still unpublished. Anything we worked out ourselves is marked as speculation.

1. There is one line on the card

Start with the card face.

Here is everything that can be read off it.

The layout is close to that of CP-001, published the same day: artwork fills most of the card, and a black band along the bottom carries the name plus one line of effect text, with SUMMON and S-001 to its right. The published image carries a “SAMPLE” watermark.

Of the fields we catalogued in how to read a card face, this card has exactly four: name, number, type and effect text. It never goes in the deck, never costs anything and never fights, so there is not much else it could need.

The English text is “You may rest this card to summon a Character card.”

2. The official site calls it a card you need

The card-types section of the official “About the NARUTO Card Game” page carries a single sentence:

登場カード 場にキャラクターを登場させる為に必要なカード。 (Summon Card: the card you need to summon Characters to the field.)

The same page’s “game features” section describes how a battle starts and what the basic action is.

リーダーカード1枚とデッキ50枚、チャクラカード5枚、登場カード1枚でバトル開始! (Start the battle with 1 Leader card, a 50-card deck, 5 Chakra cards and 1 Summon card!)

登場カードをレストにして キャラクターカードを登場 (Rest the Summon card to summon a Character card.)

So far, so straightforward. One copy, kept outside the 50-card deck, rested to put Characters onto the field. As we noted in deck building basics, it is a fixed slot with essentially nothing for the player to decide.

When we looked at the colours of the logo side of each card, the Summon card’s side turned out to be black with a white logo and an orange swirl — sharing its colour with neither the 50-card deck (white) nor the Chakra cards (orange). The colour design says the same thing as the rules text: this card lives in a zone of its own.

3. “Needed” — yet 9 of the 20 revealed cards skip it

Here is the part that does not line up.

Of the 42 entries in our card database, 29 have readable effect text, and of those, 16 Character cards plus 4 EX Characters — 20 cards — are cards that go onto the field. We counted those 20 by whether they involve S-001.

The 20 Character / EX Character cards with readable effect text (as of October 19, 2026)
  • Carry a route onto the field that does not mention S-001 9cards(45%)
  • Say nothing about being summoned (standard summon only) 11cards(55%)

Nine. They fall into three groups, which partly overlap.

  • The 4 EX Characters (N-003 Naruto Uzumaki, N-005 Gamabunta, N-014 Sasuke Uchiha, N-022 Manda)
All four say “This card cannot be played normally.” and then carry a [Summon Condition] — N-005’s is “Trash 1 of your Characters with 10 power or more.” Resting the Summon card appears nowhere in any of them
  • The 4 that summon themselves from the Support side (Choji Akimichi, N-008 Shikamaru Nara, N-010 Karin, N-021 Suigetsu Hozuki)
Each Support effect reads “summon this card, and …”. Shikamaru and Karin do it [During Your Opponent’s Attack], Choji and Suigetsu with [Quick] — meaning the board can grow during the opponent’s turn
  • The 4 that summon another Character (N-003, N-005, N-019 Jugo, N-022)
N-019 reveals the top card of the deck [When Attacking] and summons it if it matches; N-003, N-005 and N-022 drag a Character out of the deck or trash [On Summon]

Remove the overlaps and you get nine distinct cards — 45% of the 20. The remaining eleven (N-004, N-006 Jiraiya, N-007 Minato Namikaze, N-009 Kakashi Hatake, N-011 Ino Yamanaka, N-013 Itachi Uchiha, N-016 Shisui Uchiha, Hinata Hyuga, Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha, Orochimaru) say nothing about how they arrive.

To be clear, this does not mean S-001 is unnecessary. With no rulebook published, whether a [Summon Condition] or a Support-side summon also requires resting S-001 is simply undecided as far as public information goes. What is certain is that nine revealed cards are written in a way that reaches the field without mentioning the step the official site calls necessary. The picture we described in every route onto the field — three routes besides the basic one — has not changed as the card pool has grown.

4. How does a rested Summon card come back?

There is a second blank on this card, and this one is a blank in the official record.

S-001 reads “rest this card and summon a Character card.” So it rests every time it is used. When does a rested S-001 become active again?

We went through every revealed card. Not one of them says.

Both Leaders (N-001 Naruto Uzumaki and N-012 Sasuke Uchiha) carry a recovery ability:

[Recovery] If it is the second turn or later, rest this card and flip all of your CHAKRA face-up.

What it restores is Chakra, and only Chakra. It rests the Leader itself to do so, and never mentions the Summon card. As we found when we counted the cards that say “rest”, the word appears on just five revealed cards, and the ones doing the resting are the two Leaders and S-001. No card that un-rests anything has been revealed at all.

Search the 29 revealed effect texts for “active” and you get zero hits. The word has yet to appear on a single card.

From here we are speculating, but a rule returning cards to active at the start of a turn, written in the basic rules rather than on a card, is the reading closest to how other TCGs work. As we set out in the types of cost payment, this game tracks two separate states: Chakra as face-up/face-down, and Characters and Leaders as rested/(presumably) active. Chakra recovery is printed on a card; rest recovery is not. That asymmetry is at least consistent with rest recovery living in the basic rules — but it is our inference, not an official statement.

In practice, the blank matters because it decides how many Characters you can put out in one turn. If S-001 can only be used once per turn, the structural ceiling is one Character per turn, and the nine “bypass” cards counted above become very valuable indeed. With tutorial registrations now open around the world, it is also the first thing anyone attending a demo can check for themselves.

5. There are two card faces

Finally: this card exists in two artworks.

As we found when reading the contents of the CHAKRA set, the Premium Card Collection vol.00 - CHAKRA set (¥1,650 incl. tax) contains this S-001 alongside the five Chakra cards C-001–C-005. It carries no “NOT FOR SALE” marking because, unlike CP-001, it is a card in a product that is sold.

The official site has never explained how one card number ends up with two artworks — whether they are separate printings, or the July image was a placeholder. The high-resolution image did settle one thing for us: the wording we had read as 「キャラカード」 off the 439 px July sample is in fact 「キャラクターカード」 (the card database entry has been corrected).

6. Still unknown

  • What returns a rested S-001 to active (not on any revealed card; the rulebook is unpublished)
  • How many Characters can be summoned per turn. S-001 carries no [Once Per Turn] marking, but the card rests itself, which looks like a practical limit of one — unconfirmed while the recovery rule is unknown
  • Whether [Summon Condition] and Support-side summons also require resting S-001 (none of the nine texts mention it)
  • Whether S-001 can be destroyed or removed during a game. No revealed card targets the Summon card
  • How the sample and CHAKRA set versions relate (separate printing, or placeholder art)
  • Any source other than the CHAKRA set. Whether starter decks include one is unannounced

Summary

  • S-001, the Summon Card, is a fixed slot: one copy prepared at the start of a battle. One line of effect text, and no cost, stat or rarity fields on the card
  • The official site calls it “the card you need to summon Characters to the field”
  • Yet 9 of the 20 Character / EX Character cards with readable text (45%) carry a route onto the field that never mentions S-001: four EX [Summon Condition]s, four Support-side self-summons, four effects that summon another Character (with overlap)
  • No revealed card says how a rested S-001 comes back. The Leaders’ [Recovery] restores only Chakra, and “active” appears zero times across the 29 revealed effect texts
  • The card exists in two artworks — the sample (black, silhouette) and the CHAKRA set printing (newly drawn Naruto, by bikku) — both numbered S-001

When the rulebook arrives, section 4 of this article fills in completely. We will update it, and the card database entry, the day it does.
