How to Read a NARUTO Card Game Card: DMG, POW, HP, LIFE, Chakra Cost, and the Trait Line
This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.
The sample cards published in the July 29 reveal are legible enough to make out each field on the card frame: card number, stats, trait line, and more. This article breaks down what is printed where — groundwork so that when the full card list drops, you can read any card in a couple of seconds.
No rulebook has been published yet, so below we clearly separate what is confirmed on the card frame from what that suggests (analysis).
The sample cards in question
We are looking at the SAMPLE-watermarked, NOT FOR SALE cards on the official “About NARUTO Card Game” page — specifically the seven whose printed details are legible (all registered in our card database).
| Card | Type | Number |
|---|---|---|
| N-001Naruto Uzumaki | Leader | N-001 |
| N-012Sasuke Uchiha | Leader | Hidden behind a diagram highlight |
| N-008Shikamaru Nara | Character | N-008 |
| N-011Ino Yamanaka | Character | N-011 |
| N-005Gamabunta | EX Character | N-005 |
| C-001Chakra Card | Chakra | C-001 |
| S-001Summon Card | Summon | S-001 |
The “SAMPLE” watermark and “NOT FOR SALE” line mark these as preview cards, not retail product. Real cards will not carry those markings.
1. Card numbers — how “N-”, “C-” and “S-” are used
Lining up the confirmed numbers reveals a pattern:
- Leader, Character and EX Character share a single “N-” sequence: N-001 (Leader), N-005 (EX Character), N-008 (Character), N-011 (Character)
- Chakra and Summon cards sit in separate series: C-001 and S-001 (S matching “Summon Card”)
- The Gen Con 2026 tutorial gift Chakra Card -Gen Con 2026 Ver.- is CP-001 — a different number from the standard Chakra card (C-001)
Updated 2026-08-18: when this article was published, only four N-numbers were known (N-001, N-005, N-008, N-011). Scans of the Gen Con 2026 demo cards have since filled in the picture, and 17 are now confirmed.
Confirmed numbers, in order: N-001 Naruto Uzumaki (Leader) / N-003 Naruto Uzumaki (EX) / N-004 Naruto Uzumaki / N-005 Gamabunta (EX) / N-006 Jiraiya / N-007 Minato Namikaze / N-008 Shikamaru Nara / N-009 Kakashi Hatake / N-010 Karin / N-011 Ino Yamanaka / N-012 Sasuke Uchiha (Leader) / N-013 Itachi Uchiha / N-014 Sasuke Uchiha (EX) / N-016 Shisui Uchiha / N-019 Jugo / N-021 Suigetsu Hozuki / N-022 Manda
Three further observations follow.
- The highest confirmed number is N-022. The original observation — Leaders (N-001, N-012), Characters and EX Characters all share one sequence — still holds at 17 numbers
- Five numbers are missing: N-002, N-015, N-017, N-018 and N-020. And there are exactly five cards whose faces are legible but whose numbers are cut off in the available images (Choji Akimichi, Hinata Hyuga, Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha (Chidori), Orochimaru). The counts match, but which card occupies which gap is unconfirmed, and we will not guess at the assignment
- The number ranges do not line up with the deck split. With Leaders at N-001 and N-012 the sequence looks like it divides in two, but N-010 (Karin) carries the {Taka} trait and we estimate it belongs to the Sasuke side (our read of the demo decks). Whether numbering simply ignores the deck split, or whether our own estimate is wrong, awaits the official card list
Note also that N-004’s number is not definitive — the print is small and distorted in the images (it does not conflict with the confirmed N-003, N-005 and N-006).
What this suggests (analysis): “N-” likely denotes a set or product code rather than a card type. Because Leaders, Characters and EX Characters are mixed into one sequence, the natural reading is that a single set numbers all of them together, rather than reserving a number range per card type. Chakra and Summon cards, which every player needs regardless of deck, sit in their own series (C- / S-). What “N”, “C”, “S” and “CP” actually stand for has not been announced.
2. The two marks to the right of the card number
Immediately right of the card number there are two more elements:
- A single letter: this looks like a rarity mark (L for Leader, C for Common, perhaps), but there is no official explanation yet
- A circled “1” icon: meaning unannounced. The cards where it is legible (the Leader Naruto Uzumaki, Shikamaru Nara and Gamabunta) all show “1”, so it currently distinguishes nothing
Updated 2026-08-17: when this article first went up, the letter was legible on only four cards — the “L” on Naruto Uzumaki (N-001) and the “C” on Shikamaru, Ino and Gamabunta. Since then the Gen Con 2026 demo card scans have filled the picture in, and 18 cards are now legible: 2 L, 5 SR, 6 R, 5 C, with L confined to the two Leader cards.
Note also that treating the letter as a rarity and lining it up against the printed numbers does not work. Average POW + HP comes out at SR 16.0, C 13.4 and R 11.5 — C ahead of R (Gamabunta, a C, totals 18; Jiraiya, an SR, totals 11). The full 18-card table and tally live in the rarity article.
On the circled number we simply do not have enough to work with. Comparisons to other TCGs are easy to reach for, but since nothing is confirmed we make no claim.
3. The stat line — DMG, POW, HP and LIFE
Four stats are confirmed so far:
| Stat | Printed on | Known values |
|---|---|---|
| DMG (damage) | Leader, Character, EX Character | Naruto 1 / Sasuke 1 / Shikamaru 1 / Ino 2 / Gamabunta 2 |
| POW (power) | Leader, Character, EX Character | Naruto 3 / Sasuke 3 / Shikamaru 6 / Ino 5 / Gamabunta 10 |
| HP | Character, EX Character | Shikamaru 4 / Ino 8 / Gamabunta 8 |
| LIFE | Leader only | Naruto 15 / Sasuke 15 |
The key point: Leaders have LIFE and no HP. Combined with the official “Win by reducing your opponent’s Leader’s Life to 0,” the natural reading is that LIFE is the win-condition number itself, on a separate track from HP, which is a Character’s durability — though the official site has not spelled out how LIFE maps to the “LP” in the win condition, or whether it is the starting value. Both confirmed Leaders sit at LIFE 15.
The DMG value “1” is also printed as a stylized numeral with a lightning-bolt motif — treated more like an icon than plain text.
What this suggests (analysis): having DMG as a field separate from POW points to a design that splits “the number you compare in combat” from “the number you deal.” Power is referenced by effect text too — Gamabunta’s [Summon Requirements] asks you to trash “1 of your Characters with 10 or more power,” and Ino’s effect grants “+5 power/+1 damage,” modifying the two independently. The POW/HP mixes also give cards distinct roles: Shikamaru is POW 6 / HP 4 (aggressive), Ino POW 5 / HP 8 (durable). That said, the combat resolution procedure itself is unannounced, so exactly which numbers get compared is not something we can pin down yet.
4. Chakra cost — the icon on the left edge
The cost is printed inside the CHAKRA icon on the left side of the card.
Updated 2026-08-16: when this article first went up, the only legible cost was the 1 on Shikamaru Nara (N-008). Scans of the Gen Con 2026 demo cards have since filled the picture in, and 12 costs are now confirmed: eight at cost 1, four at cost 2, and not a single card above 2. All 12 are Character cards carrying a [Support], and all four cost-2 cards are mass removal that K.O.s multiple Characters at once. The full list and tally are in our article on Chakra costs.
One correction while we are here: this section originally stated flatly that the box is the cost to put a Character onto the field. In fact, what that number pays for has never been officially explained. The official site describes Chakra cards as “cards required to activate Support effects such as Ninjutsu,” and putting Characters onto the field has its own dedicated Summon Card (S-001). We now treat summon cost vs. Support activation cost as unconfirmed.
The official site describes Chakra cards as “Cards required to activate Support cards like Ninjutsu,” and you start a battle with five of them. The Chakra card itself reads “When using Chakra, turn this card face-down.” So flipping your five Chakra face-down is how you pay, and the Leader’s [Recovery] flips them all back up (covered in detail in our keyword list).
Since cost-1 cards exist, five Chakra presumably allow multiple payments in a single turn, though any limit on how many can be recovered, or how often, is unannounced.
5. The trait line — a colour plus affiliations
The trait line near the bottom lists several keywords. Lining up the five legible cards, a structure emerges:
| Card | Trait line |
|---|---|
| Naruto Uzumaki (Leader) | Wind / Jinchuriki / Hidden Leaf Village / Team 7 |
| Sasuke Uchiha (Leader) | Fire / Lightning / Uchiha Clan / The Taka |
| Shikamaru Nara | Special / Hidden Leaf Village / Team 10 |
| Ino Yamanaka | Special / Hidden Leaf Village / Team 10 |
| Gamabunta (EX Character) | Water / Toad / Mount Myoboku |
The pattern: one or two short entries come first (Wind, Fire, Lightning, Water, Special), followed by affiliations and species (Hidden Leaf Village, Team 7, Team 10, Uchiha Clan, The Taka, Toad, Mount Myoboku, Jinchuriki).
The same holds across the twelve artwork-gallery cards discussed below. On all 17 legible cards, the first trait is one of Wind, Fire, Lightning, Water or Special. Other affiliations visible there include “Akatsuki Organization” (Itachi Uchiha) and “Village Hidden in the Sound” (Orochimaru — whose Japanese image reads “Village Hidden in the Rain” instead).
What this suggests (analysis): the official site says Character cards are “chosen based on your Leader’s color.” The leading Wind / Fire / Lightning / Water / Special entries may well be that colour, though the site never explicitly ties the two together. Sasuke’s Leader carrying both Fire and Lightning might indicate Leaders that span multiple colours (unconfirmed). What “Special” denotes is also unannounced — whether it functions as a colourless or generic slot is not something we can judge.
One more thing worth flagging: Shikamaru’s and Ino’s trait lines are identical (Special / Hidden Leaf Village / Team 10). Ino’s effect buffs all three members of Team 10 “if you have [Shikamaru Nara] and [Choji Akimichi] on the field,” so traits as a deck-building synergy axis is already on display in the very first samples. Villages, squads and clans — the natural groupings of NARUTO — look set to double as deck themes.
6. What the twelve gallery cards show
Separately, the artwork gallery on the same page holds twelve sample card images (Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Orochimaru, Itachi Uchiha, Jiraiya, Tsunade, Sakura Haruno, Boruto Uzumaki). At the size they are displayed, the card name, trait line and card type (CHARACTER) are legible, while card numbers, stats and effect text are not.
The highlight is that the same character appears as multiple cards with different trait lines. Among the twelve, Sasuke Uchiha appears three times (Special / Hidden Leaf Village; Lightning / The Taka; Lightning / Uchiha Clan), as does Naruto Uzumaki (Special / Hidden Leaf Village; Wind / Hidden Leaf Village; Special / Jinchuriki / Hidden Leaf Village / Team 7).
What this suggests (analysis): characters look set to be printed as several cards differing in both colour and affiliation. Even if you want “Sasuke Uchiha” in your deck, a Lightning build might take the Taka or Uchiha Clan version while a Hidden Leaf theme takes another. Traits being used to differentiate same-named cards is worth keeping in mind for deck-building. Details for each are recorded in our card database.
Summary: the order to read a card in
With what is known, a practical reading order looks like this:
- Card type (Leader / Character / EX Character / Chakra / Summon) — if it has LIFE, it’s a Leader
- Chakra cost (left-edge icon) — when can you deploy it
- POW / HP (POW / LIFE for Leaders) — what role does it play, aggressive or durable
- DMG
- The trait line — does it fit your deck’s theme (colour, village, squad)
- The effect text, starting from its timing keyword ([Activate: Main] and friends)
How the stats are used exactly awaits the combat rules, but this reading order is common to every TCG. Get comfortable with it before the card list lands and you won’t stall on day one.
Every confirmed card is in our card database, the keywords are in the keyword list, and the wider system is covered in Reading the game system reveal. If you’d rather build up from fundamentals, start at the improvement roadmap.
We will update this article as unannounced elements — such as the meaning of the circled icon — are clarified.
