Four rarity marks — L, SR, R, C: across the 18 confirmed cards, the C average beats the R average

If you have played a trading card game before, you almost certainly check the rarity first. SR reads as “probably strong”; C reads as “one of the commons.” Years of habit do that reading for you.

The NARUTO Card Game frame also carries a letter to the right of the card number. Across the 38 entries in our card database, that letter is legible on 18 cards. Still a small slice of the eventual pool — but finally enough to ask whether the letters track the printed numbers.

They do not. Gamabunta, marked C, has POW 10 / HP 8. Jiraiya, marked SR, has POW 7 / HP 4. And this is not one odd card: on average, C came out ahead of R.

Scope of this article: everything below is tallied from cards registered in our card database. The sources are the sample card images on the official “About NARUTO CARD GAME” page and scans of the English demo cards handed out at Gen Con 2026 (SAMPLE watermark, NOT FOR SALE marking); each card page records its own source URL. And the most important caveat of all: BANDAI has never said that this letter is a rarity mark. We treat it as one because that is the convention across other TCGs, but that assumption is itself unconfirmed. For readability we call it “the rarity mark” below.

1. Four marks confirmed: L, SR, R, C

Here is the tally across the 18 cards where the letter to the right of the card number is legible.

L appears only on the two Leader cards (Naruto Uzumaki N-001 and Sasuke Uchiha N-012); no Character card has been seen with an L, and no Leader has been seen with anything else. A Leader-only slot is the natural reading, but there is no official statement.

The remaining 20 registered cards are unreadable: 16 Character cards (the 12 in the official artwork gallery plus Karin N-010, Itachi Uchiha N-013, Hinata Hyuga and Sasuke Uchiha (Chidori)), plus the Chakra Card, the Summon Card, the Gen Con Chakra Card and the Yankees Chakra Card. For those last four, we cannot even confirm that the frame has a rarity slot at all.

2. All 18 confirmed cards

Sorted by mark, with the printed numbers. POW + HP is a single figure for comparing “body size,” the same tally used in the stat overview from Aug 7.

The two Leaders carry LIFE 15 instead of HP, so they sit outside the POW + HP tally (see the Leader card guide).

3. Averages by mark — C is ahead of R

Averaged across the 16 cards left after removing the two Leaders:

The order lands on SR → C → R. The C average is 1.9 higher than R, which inverts the ordering the letters imply.

Look at the ranges and the reason is immediate:

The three ranges overlap almost entirely. The C maximum of 18 (Gamabunta) sits far above the SR minimum of 11 (Jiraiya and Orochimaru), and the R maximum of 18 (Manda) does the same. “SR means big numbers, C means small ones” does not hold anywhere in the confirmed data.

4. Why they overlap — the marks cut across all three tiers

The Aug 7 stat overview showed that confirmed Characters fall into three clean tiers by POW + HP. Recounting those tiers by rarity mark:

Every tier mixes SR and C. The top tier holds a C (Gamabunta); the bottom tier holds two SRs (Jiraiya and Orochimaru). That placement is exactly what produces the overlapping ranges.

In other words, what sets the printed numbers in the confirmed data is not the rarity but the card class — whether it carries a Support line, and whether it is an EX Character. It mirrors the finding in the Aug 16 cost article that chakra is priced against the jutsu rather than the body: the numbers follow the role, and rarity rides on a separate axis above them.

When a new card is revealed, “it’s SR, so it’s strong” has no basis right now. Read the class first — EX or not, Support line or not.

5. Mirrored roles carry mirrored marks — except for one pair

The demo deck breakdown showed how deliberately the Gen Con 2026 demo decks mirror each other between the Naruto side and the Sasuke side. Cards that mirror in role also mirror in rarity mark.

• Leaders: Naruto Uzumaki N-001 L / Sasuke Uchiha N-012 L
  Both DMG 1 / POW 3 / LIFE 15, with identical [Recovery] text
• Ace EX: Naruto Uzumaki N-003 SR / Sasuke Uchiha N-014 SR
  POW/HP of 11/10 and 10/11 — a swapped mirror, both totalling 21
• Rested removal: Jiraiya N-006 SR / Orochimaru SR
  Word-for-word identical effect text, and POW/HP swapped at 7/4 and 4/7, both totalling 11
• Support negation: Kakashi Hatake N-009 R / Shisui Uchiha N-016 R
  Both negate [When a Support is activated]; only the price they pay differs

Four pairs, four matches. Then the two EX summoned beasts break the pattern.

• Summoned-beast EX: Gamabunta N-005 C / Manda N-022 R
  POW/HP of 10/8 and 8/10 — again a swapped mirror, again totalling 18 apiece. Yet the marks read C and R

Two cards mirrored right down to the printed numbers, carrying different rarity marks — the only such case in the confirmed data. Since demo-card printing need not match the retail product, a misreading or a sample-specific quirk both remain possible. For now we record it only as “one pair that does not match.”

Note too that the four EX Characters carry SR, SR, R and C — three different marks — even though their POW + HP of 18–21 is the highest band among all Characters. “EX means high rarity” does not hold either.

6. What is still unknown

BANDAI has published nothing at all about rarity. Everything below is tracked as unconfirmed.

• Whether the letter is a rarity mark at all. Neither the official site nor the July 29 reveal explains it
• What C, R, SR and L abbreviate, and how they rank. Other TCGs make C < R < SR tempting, but no ordering has been stated
• Whether other Leader-side marks exist, or whether anything sits above SR
• Pull rates per rarity. The product line-up — packs, decks, configurations — is unannounced
• Whether demo and sample cards print the same marks as the retail version. The Gen Con 2026 cards are SAMPLE-watermarked demos
• Whether a single card can appear at multiple rarities (parallels and the like). Several alternate versions of the same character are confirmed — Naruto Uzumaki has six — but those are distinct cards with different traits and art. Not one rarity variant of the same card has been seen

These wait on an official card list or a product announcement. The next big reveal window is New York Comic Con 2026 (Oct. 8–11).

Summary

• The apparent rarity mark is legible on 18 cards: 2 L, 5 SR, 6 R, 5 C
• L looks Leader-exclusive; no Character card has been seen with one
• Average POW + HP runs SR 16.0 / C 13.4 / R 11.5 — C ahead of R, with heavily overlapping ranges
• The cause is that rarity is scattered across all three tiers (Support / non-Support / EX). What sets the numbers is the card class, not the mark
• Mirrored roles carry mirrored marks, except the summoned-beast EX pair (Gamabunta C / Manda R)
• Meaning, ordering and pull rates are all officially unannounced
