Twenty Characters, Thirty-Four Cards — Why There Are Six Naruto Uzumakis, and Why Their Traits Do Not Match

“Is this character going to get a card?” — for an unreleased card game, it is one of the first things anyone wants to know.

Between the July 29 reveal and the Gen Con 2026 demo cards, the NARUTO Card Game now has 20 characters and 34 cards with confirmed names.

This article lists all 20, then works out what those “second versions of the same character” actually mean. The headline finding first:

Two cards of the same Naruto Uzumaki can carry different leading traits. The attribute belongs to the individual card, not to the character.

Scope note: this is compiled from cards already logged in our card database. The sources are sample images on the official “What is the NARUTO Card Game” page and scans of English-language demo cards handed out at Gen Con 2026 (SAMPLE watermark, NOT FOR SALE). The official card list is unpublished, so this is only what has surfaced so far.

Twenty characters have a readable card name, counting the two summoned creatures.

Outside the character cards, Chakra Card C-001, Summon Card S-001 and the promo CP-001 are confirmed, bringing the card database to 37 entries.

What those 34 break down into — 22 read in full, 12 read only partly

Not all 34 are known to the same depth, and conflating them will skew any tally.

• Official card-type and gameplay diagrams, plus the Gen Con 2026 demo cards (22 cards)
  Card number, stats and full effect text
• The ARTWORK gallery on the official “What is the NARUTO Card Game” page (12 cards)
  Card name and traits only (no number, no effect text)

Important caveat: all 12 ARTWORK gallery cards display the same numbers — DMG 3, POW 6, HP 6. Those are almost certainly layout placeholders rather than real stats. That is exactly why the full stat tally excludes these 12. This article does not touch their numbers at all.

Finding 1: Two characters account for a third of everything

Of the 34 cards, six are Naruto Uzumaki and six are Sasuke Uchiha — 12 cards, or 35% of the total, for two characters.

Loading up on the two leads is a familiar move across Bandai’s other TCGs, but it is useful to see it in actual counts. Read the other way: the 20 confirmed characters skew heavily toward people close to Naruto and Sasuke. Hidden Leaf Village, the Uchiha Clan and The Taka between them account for nearly all of the roster.

Finding 2: The leading trait changes from version to version

This is the core of it.

As set out in how to read a card face, the trait row always opens with an attribute — Wind, Fire, Lightning, Water, Special, Taijutsu. And that opening entry does not match across versions of the same character.

Lining up the six characters that have more than one version:

• Naruto Uzumaki — leading trait by version: Wind (N-001, N-003, Gallery #8) / Special (N-004, Gallery #4, Gallery #12) (Consistent? No)
• Sasuke Uchiha — leading trait by version: Fire + Lightning (N-012, N-014) / Lightning (Chidori, Gallery #7, Gallery #11) / Special (Gallery #3) (Consistent? No)
• Jiraiya — leading trait by version: Fire (N-006) / Special (Gallery #5) (Consistent? No)
• Itachi Uchiha — leading trait by version: Fire (N-013) / Special (Gallery #6) (Consistent? No)
• Sakura Haruno — leading trait by version: Taijutsu (demo card) / Special (Gallery #9) (Consistent? No)
• Orochimaru — leading trait by version: Special (demo card) / Special (Gallery #1) (Consistent? Yes)

Five of the six differ.

Put another way:

The attribute is set per card, not per character.

That sounds obvious stated plainly, but it changes a deckbuilding assumption. “Sasuke is a Lightning character, so he goes in the Lightning deck” simply does not hold. There is a Fire-and-Lightning Sasuke, a Lightning-only Sasuke and a Special Sasuke. What you register is not a character — it is a specific card.

If you know the source material, the split looks natural. Gallery #3 Sasuke is Hidden Leaf Village, #7 is The Taka, #11 is Uchiha Clan — the affiliations Sasuke moves through over the course of the story, printed straight onto the trait row. Which era of Sasuke a card depicts is what sets its traits.

Caveat: 11 of the 12 gallery cards show two traits; only one (Gallery #12, Naruto) shows four. Because the gallery images are small, a third or fourth trait may be cropped or omitted on the two-trait cards — the existence of a four-trait card suggests there is no hard limit of two, but this cannot be settled. All the list above can claim with confidence is that the leading entry differs.

Finding 3: Only one BORUTO-generation card so far

The official site states that the game draws on all three series — NARUTO, NARUTO Shippuden and BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS.

Yet of the 20 confirmed characters, exactly one is from the BORUTO generation: Boruto Uzumaki. His traits read “Lightning / Hidden Leaf Village” — a different leading attribute from any of his father’s versions (Wind or Special).

So the series scope is confirmed all the way through BORUTO, but only a single card has surfaced from it. That is a lot of room to grow as more cards are revealed.

What this means for deckbuilding right now

As covered in the full trait roundup, confirmed effect text uses two different ways to point at cards: naming a card outright and grouping by trait. The version question feeds straight into that split.

• Effects that name a card reach across versions — Gamabunta N-005’s [On Summon] specifies “a non-EX ‘Naruto Uzumaki’”, so any of the six Narutos qualifies as long as it is not the EX
• Effects that reference a trait pick and choose — EX Sasuke N-014’s [Summon Requirement] demands “1 of your Characters with the {The Taka} trait”. Even Sasuke himself fails that check in the versions that lack {The Taka} (Chidori, Gallery #3, Gallery #11)

“Play the characters you like” and “assemble the traits your effects demand” are two different jobs. Between them sits a step you cannot skip: choosing which version of a character to run.

Unconfirmed: how many copies of a same-named card a deck may contain — and whether the limit keys off the card name or the card number — is unannounced. Until that is settled, there is no way to work out how many versions you could stack.

One discrepancy worth flagging

Gallery #1, Orochimaru, does not merely differ in wording between languages — the content itself conflicts. The Japanese image reads “Special / Village Hidden in the Rain”, while the English image reads “Special / The Legendary Sannin / Village Hidden in the Sound”. Japanese-versus-English wording drift is something we covered in the official site language differences article, but this is the only case where the substance of a trait row disagrees. The tally above follows the Japanese image; which one is final is unknown.

What we still do not know

• The size of the full card list — with no total announced, there is no way to say what fraction 34 represents
• The copy limit on same-named cards — whether it keys off name or card number is unannounced
• Card numbers, stats and effect text for the 12 gallery cards — all unpublished
• Whether the gallery trait rows are complete — a third or fourth trait may be cropped on the two-trait cards
• What attributes (Wind / Fire / Lightning / Water / Special / Taijutsu) actually do — whether they restrict a deck’s colours or merely serve as effect references is unannounced (the same open question raised in the trait article)
