Three Cards Reveal the Top of Your Deck. One Card Can Stack It — What Sasuke Uchiha (N-012) Is Actually Doing
This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.
The honest first reaction to Sasuke Uchiha (N-012)‘s Leader ability was: that looks dull.
[Activate: Main] [Once Per Turn] Draw 1 card and place 1 card from your hand on top of your deck.
Draw one, put one back. Your hand size does not change. Next to Naruto Uzumaki (N-001), whose ability gives a Character +3 power and affects the board directly, it reads as the weaker of the two. Our Leader card article (Aug 5) rated it as “a free, every-turn way to improve the quality of your hand.”
Then we searched every confirmed effect text for one phrase — “top of your deck” — and the picture changed.
Three confirmed cards begin an effect with “Reveal the top card of your deck.” And exactly one card can put something there: this Leader.
This article lays out everything confirmed about the top card of your deck as a place, and works out the second job the Sasuke Leader ability is doing.
Scope note: compiled from cards logged in our card database, read from official sample images and scans of English-language demo cards handed out at Gen Con 2026 (SAMPLE watermark, NOT FOR SALE). Neither the official rulebook nor the card list has been published. Where we speculate, we label it as speculation.
1. “Reveal the top card of your deck” — three confirmed cards
Start with the reveal side. Three confirmed cards look at your own deck’s top card.
| Card | Timing | Hit condition | Payoff on a hit |
|---|---|---|---|
| N-022Manda N-022 | [On Summon] | The revealed card is a non-EX Character | Summon that card |
| N-019Jugo N-019 | [When Attacking] | The revealed card is “Sasuke Uchiha” or has the {The Taka} type, and is not an EX Character | Summon that card |
| N-013Itachi Uchiha N-013 | [On Summon] | The revealed card has the {Uchiha Clan} type | The chosen Leader or Character cannot attack during your opponent’s next turn |
All three share a structure: reveal first, then check. Hit and you profit; miss and you have merely shown a card. Which means the real strength of these three is not printed on the card — it lives in your deck list.
The hit conditions differ sharply in width.
- Manda’s is widest — any “non-EX Character,” with no name or type requirement. In practice, the proportion of Characters in your deck is the hit rate
- Jugo’s sits in the middle — a two-way check: the name “Sasuke Uchiha,” or the {The Taka} type
- Itachi’s is narrowest — {Uchiha Clan} only
The payoffs do not scale in the other direction, though. Manda and Jugo add a body to the board on a hit (the “cheating out” route), while Itachi only stops one attacker and adds nothing. Narrower does not mean bigger here — worth remembering.
2. “Place a card on top of your deck” — exactly one confirmed card
Now the stacking side. Among all confirmed effect text, only one thing can put a card on top of your own deck.
Sasuke Uchiha N-012 [Activate: Main] [Once Per Turn] Draw 1 card and place 1 card from your hand on top of your deck.
The “dull” ability from the opening. Line it up against the three cards in §1 and it reads completely differently.
Put the card you want on top of the deck, then reveal it.
Concretely:
| Set up for | What you place on top | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Jugo | A non-EX Character from hand named “Sasuke Uchiha” or with {The Taka} | The [When Attacking] reveal hits with certainty — that Character is summoned |
| Manda | Any non-EX Character from hand | The [On Summon] reveal hits with certainty — that Character is summoned |
| Itachi | Any {Uchiha Clan} card from hand | The attack lock is guaranteed |
It also matters that stacking the deck costs no Chakra. The Naruto Leader’s [Activate: Main] begins “Flip 1 of your CHAKRA face-down”; the Sasuke Leader’s text contains no payment at all (see our Chakra deep dive). A free, once-per-turn way to fix the top of your deck is what the confirmed text describes.
There is a structural angle too: putting a Character onto the top of your deck is a way to get it onto the field. Because you bring exactly one Summon card (S-001), the act of summoning normally is itself rate-limited. Stacking a Character and picking it up with Jugo or Manda is a second summoning lane that does not consume that slot.
Unconfirmed: whether the Leader’s [Activate: Main] and your attacks can be sequenced freely within the same phase has not been announced. The turn structure confirmed by the official playmat is Refresh → Draw → Main → End, with nothing resembling a battle phase, so attacking presumably happens during the Main phase — but there is no official statement. Whether “stack, then swing” works is a rulebook question.
3. All four cards sit on the same side of the table
This was the most interesting finding. Using our own inference from the trait lines to split the Gen Con demo decks in two, the four cards cluster completely.
| Cards that touch the top of the deck | |
|---|---|
| Sasuke side | Manda N-022 (reveal) / Jugo N-019 (reveal) / Itachi Uchiha N-013 (reveal) / Sasuke Uchiha N-012 (stack) |
| Naruto side | None |
The Naruto side, meanwhile, mines a different zone.
| Cards that touch the trash | |
|---|---|
| Naruto side | Gamabunta N-005 (summons a non-EX “Naruto Uzumaki,” “Jiraiya,” or “Minato Namikaze” from the trash) / Naruto Uzumaki N-003 (summons “Naruto Uzumaki” from deck or trash) |
| Sasuke side | None (EX Sasuke N-014’s [Summon Requirements] puts cards there) |
So in what has been revealed:
- Sasuke side = the top of the deck is the resource. Cards you have not drawn yet, borrowed early
- Naruto side = the trash is the resource. Cards already spent, dragged back out
And the difference between the two Leaders’ [Activate: Main] abilities is exactly this difference. Naruto pays Chakra to strengthen the board (+3 power); Sasuke manipulates the deck for free. We wrote in the Aug 5 article that the two Leaders differ only in [Activate: Main] and their trait line — and that difference turns out to be a difference in how the whole deck wins.
Speculation: this clustering may simply be sample bias, since almost everything confirmed comes from two Gen Con demo decks. Demo decks exist to make two colors legible, and a wider product-version card pool may well give the Naruto side deck-top tools too. There is nothing yet that lets anyone declare “the Sasuke side is the deck-top archetype.”
4. A stacked top card comes back to your hand next turn
One more property falls out of the text plus the phase structure.
The turn is Refresh → Draw → Main → End, which means your turn always contains a Draw Phase (how many cards is unpublished).
So if you stack the top of your deck during your Main phase and end the turn without using it, your next Draw Phase puts that card into your hand.
That is not a loss — the card simply returns. But it shapes how the ability should be read:
- Stacking is an operation you cash in on the same turn
- If you have nothing to cash it in with, use the ability for its original job — bury a card you don’t want and swap out your next draw
Which makes the Sasuke Leader ability best described as two modes you choose between every turn: improve your hand, or guarantee a reveal. It does not net you a card because what it gives you instead is a choice.
5. General TCG principles — how to evaluate “reveal” cards
The following is not confirmed for the NARUTO Card Game; it is how deck-top reveal cards work across TCGs generally.
1. A reveal card’s strength is “hits ÷ cards remaining.” The official explanation starts you with 1 Leader card plus a 50-card deck (the English site says “a deck of 51 cards”). Using 50 for the arithmetic:
2. So the question is never “include the reveal card or not” — it is “how many hits do I run.” Same shape as the point in the demo decklist article: a conditional card’s count is decided together with the count of cards that satisfy it. Run Itachi and your {Uchiha Clan} count is his power level; run Jugo and it is your {The Taka} and “Sasuke Uchiha” count.
3. The value of deck stacking is “turning one of your reveals into a certainty.” Raising a probability and fixing it are different tools. One stack is worth as much as the number of reveals you make that turn: in a turn with a single reveal it converts that one, and in a deck that reveals two or three times it still only converts one. The Sasuke Leader ability is [Once Per Turn], so one certainty per turn is the ceiling.
4. Price in what a miss costs. A miss usually costs no cards — but it does cost tempo, the thing you could have done instead. In the framing of card advantage and tempo, reveal cards are cards that risk tempo rather than cards.
6. Still unknown
The deck-top area has a lot of open questions. All are currently unpublished.
- Where a revealed card goes when it is not summoned. Stay on top? Bottom of the deck? Shuffle? Without this, the odds on a second reveal after a miss cannot be calculated. If it stays on top, replacing a dead top card with the Leader ability becomes a real line of play
- The sequencing of the Leader’s [Activate: Main] and attacking. With no battle phase, attacks presumably happen in the Main phase — but nothing official says so
- How [Once Per Turn] is counted. The card face states the restriction; the formal definition of the notation is unpublished
- How many cards the Draw Phase draws, and whether the first turn draws at all (also flagged as unconfirmed in our turn-order article)
- The final deck size. Whether “a 50-card deck” and “a deck of 51 cards” are the same thing counted differently is unconfirmed
- The copy limit per card name. Until that lands, the ceiling on your hit count is unknown too
Summary
- Three confirmed effects reveal the top of your deck — Manda N-022 (summons a non-EX Character), Jugo N-019 (summons on “Sasuke Uchiha” or {The Taka}), Itachi Uchiha N-013 (attack lock on {Uchiha Clan})
- Exactly one confirmed effect places a card there: the Sasuke Uchiha N-012 Leader ability — and it costs no Chakra
- Together, they let you stack a hit from your hand and make the reveal a certainty, which also works as a second summoning lane around the one-Summon-card limit
- All four are on the (inferred) Sasuke side. The Naruto side uses trash recursion via Gamabunta and EX Naruto — a clean “deck top vs. trash” split
- A stacked card returns to your hand at your next Draw Phase, so stacking is a same-turn operation. With nothing to cash it in on, use the ability to improve your hand instead
- Generally, a reveal’s strength is hits ÷ cards remaining; stacking is worth one guaranteed reveal, and [Once Per Turn] caps that at one per turn
- Where a missed reveal goes is the biggest blank in this whole area
“Dull Leader” does not survive contact with the confirmed text. Once the rulebook is published we will revise this article, starting with where revealed cards go and how [Activate: Main] sequences. Confirmed cards live in our card database and notations in the keyword index.
