The Chakra Card, Fully Explained — How a Five-Card Resource Works, and How CP-001 (Gen Con Ver.) Differs

This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.

Every game of the NARUTO Card Game starts with exactly five of one card set aside — the Chakra Card. It sits outside your 50-card deck and functions as your resource: what you spend to activate jutsu and support effects.

In our own analytics, the Chakra Card page is one of the most-visited pages from search. Yet the facts about Chakra have been scattered across several articles — the July 29 reveal, the card frame primer, and the playmat zones.

So this article pulls everything currently confirmed about the Chakra Card into one page: the mechanism, the cards that interact with it, how the promo version differs, and — importantly — what is still unknown.

Ground rules for this article: what follows is read from the sample card images and text on the official “About NARUTO Card Game” page, plus printed materials handed out at Gen Con 2026 (demo cards and the official playmat). No official rulebook has been published, and details may change for the retail release. Where we speculate, we label it as speculation.

1. The card face and the basics

Card nameChakra Card
Card numberC-001 (a separate series from the “N-” character numbering)
Effect text“When using Chakra, turn this card face-down.”
Number used in a game5 (prepared separately from the 50-card deck)
PlacementThe CHAKRA AREA on the playmat — its own zone, independent of the deck

The official site describes the Chakra Card as “a card required to activate support effects such as jutsu.” The English site goes further: “Use Chakra to activate face down support cards.

What you bring to a game is 1 Leader card + a 50-card deck + 5 Chakra Cards + 1 Summon card. Where most TCGs feed you resources out of your deck, the NARUTO Card Game puts the resource on the table as an independent stack from turn one.

2. Face-down is paying; face-up is recovering

The loop closes neatly using only confirmed text.

Paying — the card face says it outright: “When using Chakra, turn this card face-down.” Turning your five Chakra face-down one at a time is the payment. You can see it stated as a cost on Leader Naruto Uzumaki (N-001):

[Activate: Main] Turn 1 of your Chakra face-down and choose 1 Character: that card gains +3 power for this turn.

The format is “cost : effect,” split by the colon (see our note on [Activate: Main]). “Turn 1 of your Chakra face-down” is unambiguously the cost.

Recovering — what turns them back is [Recovery], printed on both Leaders:

[Recovery] From the second turn onward, rest this card and turn all of your Chakra face-up.

Naruto Uzumaki (N-001) and Sasuke Uchiha (N-012) carry identical text. Two things stand out: it flips all of your Chakra, not one at a time — and it rests your Leader to do so.

What we can read into this (speculation): Leaders have combat stats printed on them (DMG 1 / POW 3). And resting is already used as a cost elsewhere — the Summon Card (S-001) reads “You may rest this card to summon a Character card.” So [Recovery] looks less like free refuelling and more like resource recovery bought by tapping your Leader. That said, what exactly a rested Leader can no longer do has not been announced.

Chakra never rests — the game tracks two separate states (added August 26)

That single [Recovery] sentence actually moves two different kinds of “used up” at once.

[Recovery] From the second turn onward, rest this card (the Leader goes sideways) and turn all of your Chakra face-up (Chakra flips over).

Across the 24 entries with readable text, those two vocabularies never once overlap.

In other words, zero cards say “rest your Chakra.” Tracking Chakra by which side is showing rather than by orientation makes sense for a fixed pool of exactly five cards: you can count what is left at a glance (speculation). The full tally on the resting side is in Five revealed cards say “rest”.

3. Every revealed card that references Chakra

Among the card faces we can currently read, exactly three cards refer to Chakra by name.

Two points are worth pausing on.

The two Leaders are not symmetrical. They share [Recovery], but only Naruto’s side has an [Activate: Main] that consumes Chakra. Sasuke’s [Activate: Main] is a [Once per turn] draw-and-place with no Chakra cost. Same resource pool, different burn rate built into the Leader.

The one “Chakra lock” points at yourself. Shisui Uchiha’s (N-016) Kotoamatsukami is the only revealed card that shuts off Chakra recovery at all — but what it shuts off is the Chakra of the player who fired it, not the opponent’s. The card face reads “you cannot turn your CHAKRA face-up,” following the same convention used across every revealed card, where “your” marks payments and your own zones.

So this is not a lock on the opponent — it is the price of the negation. The player who fired it appears unable to flip Chakra face-up, even with [Recovery], until the end phase of their next turn (how [Recovery] and “cannot turn face-up” interact is unannounced). It is the same structure as the other [Support Activated] negation, Kakashi Hatake’s (N-009) Lightning Blade, which pays “reduce your life by 2” (the two costs compared).

Correction (August 13, 2026): This section originally described the effect as shutting off “the opponent’s resource recovery,” with “the player hit by it” unable to flip Chakra face-up. The card text targets the Chakra of the player who activated it. We apologise for the error (the card database entry has said “your Chakra” correctly since it was created).

4. Face-down supports and Chakra — what “read beneath the underneath” actually means

The SUPPORT AREA of the official playmat handed out at Gen Con 2026 carries this printed rule:

You may set up to 5 cards face-down. You cannot set another card if there are already 5.

Five face-down supports, maximum. Combine that with the English site’s “use Chakra to activate face down support cards,” and a sequence emerges:

  1. Set a card face-down in the SUPPORT AREA (up to 5)
  2. When you want it, turn Chakra face-down to pay, flip the support up, and resolve it

This matches the card faces. Most revealed Character cards carry a [Support] heading plus a timing keyword that works on the opponent’s turn — [During your opponent’s attack] or [Quick]. See Shikamaru Nara (N-008), whose Shadow Imitation Jutsu cancels an attack, or Kakashi Hatake (N-009), whose Lightning Blade negates a support.

The tagline “a ninja must read beneath the underneath” almost certainly points here: the bluff game between face-down cards and remaining Chakra. How many of your opponent’s Chakra are still face-up is public information, so “they only have one face-up — they can’t afford the expensive one” becomes a real read. A hard cap of five is what makes that arithmetic legible.

5. How CP-001 “Chakra Card -Gen Con 2026 Ver.-” differs

This is the pair most often confused in search. They are different cards with different numbers.

“CP-” appears to be the promo numbering series (see the card numbering system). CP-001’s card face still has not been shown. Whether it is purely an alternate-art commemorative version or differs in some other way remains unannounced.

6. What is still unknown

That was the confirmed part. The following has not been announced at all:

  • What the Chakra cost number on the left edge of a card actually pays for. Is it the cost to put a Character onto the field, the cost to activate it as a face-down [Support], or both? Revealed cards show costs of 1 and 2
  • Limits on how often you can refresh. [Recovery] says “from the second turn onward,” but whether it’s usable every turn, and where in the four phases (Refresh → Draw → Main → End) it happens, is unknown
  • Whether the Refresh Phase restores Chakra automatically. The name suggests un-resting, but if it did refill Chakra, the Leader’s separate [Recovery] would have little reason to exist. The relationship is unannounced
  • Whether the count ever moves off five. No revealed card adds Chakra or turns an opponent’s Chakra face-down
  • Whether all five Chakra Cards are the same card. Whether they’re all C-001, or chosen from multiple kinds, has not been stated

In summary

Three lines cover what can be said with confidence today:

  1. Chakra is a fixed five-card resource independent of your deck, turned face-down when spent
  2. The only confirmed way to get it back is your Leader’s [Recovery] — rest the Leader, flip everything face-up
  3. The only revealed card that interrupts that loop is Shisui Uchiha’s Kotoamatsukami — and it interrupts the firing player’s own Chakra, as the price of a negation rather than as disruption

Structurally, you can’t get “resource screwed” by failing to draw lands. But with a hard ceiling of five, when and how much you spend is the skill. We’ll update this article once the rulebook is out. Revealed cards live in the card database, keyword notations in the keyword index, and the chronology of confirmed facts on the timeline.
