The "Logo Side" — Presumably the Card Back — Comes in Four Colours, Not Five: Only Character and EX Character Share One, and Turning a Chakra Card Face-Down Hides Nothing
This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.
Our card database holds 38 revealed entries for the NARUTO Card Game. We have counted their stats, their traits and their effect text more times than we can list.
There is one side we had never counted: the back of the card.
The Card Types section of the official “About the NARUTO Card Game” page shows, for each of the five types, the card face alongside a side carrying only the logo. Going through those five images one at a time gives a clean result.
The logo sides differ by card type, and there are four colours in all. Of the five types, only Character and EX Character share one.
Scope of this article: everything below comes from the images in the Card Types section of the official “About the NARUTO Card Game” page (type_img01 through type_img05), checked directly on October 4, 2026 on both the Japanese and English versions. The images are identical in both. The official site never describes this side as the “back” in words, so we call it the logo side throughout and keep the question of whether it is the card back separate, as inference.
1. The five logo sides, side by side
Each block in the Card Types section shows a representative card face for that type plus one logo side.
| Card type (card shown) | Logo side colour | Logo colour |
|---|---|---|
| Leader Card (Naruto Uzumaki N-001) | Red | White |
| Character Card (Ino Yamanaka N-011 / Shikamaru Nara N-008) | White | Black with an orange swirl |
| EX Character (Gamabunta N-005) | White | Black with an orange swirl |
| Chakra Card (C-001) | Orange | White |
| Summon Card (S-001) | Black | White with an orange swirl |
Five types, four colours. White is used by Character and EX Character; the other three types each have a colour to themselves.
What is interesting is how the colours are chosen. The Chakra card’s own face is orange and the Summon card’s own face is black, matching their logo sides exactly. The Leader card, Naruto Uzumaki (N-001), has a red frame on the face and a red logo side.
Character cards are the one type where they do not match. Ino Yamanaka (N-011) and Shikamaru Nara (N-008) both print red-family frames on the face, yet their logo side is white. The Character logo side looks deliberately decoupled from the colour of the card face.
2. White is required only of the cards that go into the deck
Why would Character cards be the exception? Line it up against the list of things you bring to a game, which we set out in our first read of the game system, and it explains itself.
The English official site states the requirements as “Battle with a deck of 51 cards, 5 Chakra cards, and 1 Summon card,” while the Japanese and Traditional Chinese versions read “1 Leader card and a 50-card deck, 5 Chakra cards, 1 Summon card” — a wording gap we covered in reading the official site in four languages. Either way the table holds 57 cards (51 + 5 + 1, with the English “51” apparently counting the Leader). Sort those 57 by the logo-side colour found above:
50 of the 57 are white, and the remaining seven split across three colours. Those 50 white cards form a single pile — the deck.
A deck has to present an identical back on every card because a single odd one out tells you where it sits in the pile. Turn that around: cards that never enter the deck have no reason to match it.
The eight board zones printed on the official playmat handed out at Gen Con 2026 map onto exactly that split.
| Zone | What goes there | Logo side |
|---|---|---|
| DECK | The deck | White |
| CHAKRA AREA | Chakra cards | Orange |
| LEADER CARD | The Leader card | Red |
| SUMMON CARD | The Summon card | Black |
Chakra, Leader and Summon start the game in dedicated zones and never mix into the deck — which is precisely why they can afford to differ.
From here this is inference: because the official site does not say so, we cannot state outright that the logo side is the card back. But a layout in which the two deck-going types share one colour and the three non-deck types each take their own makes design sense for card backs. If these were a separate product such as sleeves, it would be hard to explain both why the colour changes per type and why Character and EX alone are matched.
3. “Setting face-down” and “turning face-down” turn out to be different actions
This is where it starts to matter in play.
Among the rules text revealed so far, there are two distinct actions that flip a card over.
- Set a Support face-downSUPPORT AREA, up to 5
- Turn a Chakra face-downpaying a cost
- [Recovery] flips them backChakra only
The first is setting Support cards face-down. The playmat’s SUPPORT AREA prints “You may set up to 5 cards face-down,” and the English official site explains “Use Chakra to activate face down support cards.” As we laid out in reading face-down cards, the cap is five.
The second is turning Chakra cards face-down. Naruto Uzumaki, Leader (N-001) opens with “[Activate: Main] Flip 1 of your CHAKRA face-down and choose 1 Character,” and the same card’s [Recovery] puts them back with “flip all of your CHAKRA face-up.” As covered in the full Chakra card breakdown, face-down means spent.
Both are written as flipping a card over. Once you know the logo-side colours, they stop looking alike at all.
- Setting a Support face-down — the set card shows the same white back as every deck card. Your hand, the rest of your deck and everything headed for the trash are white too. What you set really is hidden
- Turning a Chakra face-down — it stays orange. Nothing else on the table shows an orange back, so nothing about it is hidden
In other words, turning Chakra face-down is not an act of concealment. It is a status display meaning “this Chakra has been spent” — the same category of thing as rest and active, just using the only other way of changing how a card looks.
It also underwrites the first of the six pieces of public information we listed in reading face-down cards: how many face-up Chakra your opponent has left. When the cards you are counting are distinguishable by colour, there is no way to miscount how much they have already paid.
The flip side is that the set cards offer no colour clue at all. Five cards in the SUPPORT AREA look like five white backs. Reading them still depends entirely on indirect information — face-up Chakra count, trash, board state.
4. One new piece of evidence on where EX Characters live
Our article on the four EX Characters parked one question:
Whether EX Characters are part of the 50-card deck. The official site’s wording is “1 Leader card, a 50-card deck, 5 Chakra cards and 1 Summon card,” and it never states where EX Characters sit.
The logo sides give that question material. Two confirmed facts:
- The EX Character logo side is the same white as Character cards (it has no dedicated colour the way red, orange and black are dedicated)
- None of the playmat’s eight zones is an EX Character zone (CHARACTER AREA, SUPPORT AREA, CHAKRA AREA, DECK, TRASH, LEADER CARD, SUMMON CARD, EXCLUSION AREA)
From here this is inference: every card type that sits outside the deck has been given both a dedicated colour and a dedicated zone. EX Characters have neither, and look to be handled as Character cards. The most natural reading right now is that EX Characters are inside the 50-card deck. The official site has said nothing about it either way, and with EX Characters like Gamabunta (N-005) entering play from the trash, how cards reach the trash in the first place is another question the rulebook still has to answer.
5. What is still unknown
- The official site never calls this side the “back” — the Card Types images carry no caption, and the body text does not mention it
- What the colours mean — whether the colour itself carries any game meaning, or simply distinguishes the types, is unannounced. It needs to be kept separate from the system-level colour in our glossary entry for Color, the one behind “Character cards are chosen based on your Leader’s color” — Character backs are white regardless of the frame colour on the face
- Sleeves — sleeving a 50-card deck is routine, but whether the 5 Chakra, 1 Summon and 1 Leader need sleeves, and whether they should match the deck’s, is unannounced. With the backs already differing, it is not even clear what matching would achieve
- Promo card backs — the back of CP-001 Chakra Card and the other distributed promos has not been published, so we cannot confirm it matches the orange Chakra back
- Sample versus retail — every image checked here is a SAMPLE card. The retail printing could still change
Every revealed card can be checked individually in our card database. For the front of the card see how to read a card, for the Support and Chakra mind game see reading face-down cards, and for the board layout see the official playmat article. If you would rather work through the basics in order, start from the improvement roadmap.
We will update this article once the rulebook puts the treatment of card backs in writing.
