Only 12 Cards Mention "Attack" — and 7 of Them Belong to the Player Being Attacked. Just One Card Says It Interrupts the Attack

This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.

The official site states the win condition plainly: reduce your opponent’s Leader’s Life to 0. The only means of doing that made public so far is attacking. To win this game, an attack has to connect.

So how much do we actually know about attacking? We re-read the effect text of all 38 entries in our card database, searching for the word “attack.” Twelve cards matched — and the split runs the opposite way from what you might expect. Seven of the twelve belong to the player being attacked, not the one attacking.

Basis for this article: the figures below are compiled from the 38 entries in our card database. Sources are the sample images on the official “About NARUTO CARD GAME” page and scans of the English-language demo cards distributed at Gen Con 2026 (SAMPLE watermark, NOT FOR SALE marking); each card page records its source URL. The official rulebook is still unpublished, and the attack resolution procedure itself has never been announced. Demo-card specifications may differ from the retail release. Anything speculative is flagged as such.

1. The 12 cards that mention “attack,” sorted by which side plays them

A. The five that help the attacker

The first four are covered in detail in our article on the Rush keyword and the power 10 line. What matters here is the shape: four of the five merely make an attack possible. Only Jugo does something because an attack happened.

B. The seven used by the defender

Which side plays the 12 cards that mention "attack"
  • Used by the defender 7cards(58%)
  • Help the attacker 5cards(42%)

2. Finding 1: the majority of “attack” cards belong to the player being hit

Within what has been revealed, the defensive side owns more of the word “attack” than the offensive side does.

That is not just a count. Four of the five offensive cards only create the opportunity to attack — they give no extra payoff once the attack lands. The seven defensive cards, by contrast, intervene in the attack directly.

There is a second asymmetry. As set out in Reading face-down Supports, all six of the defender’s Supports come out of the face-down row. The attacker commits without seeing what is waiting.

The one exception is Itachi Uchiha (N-013), a Character that locks down an attack in advance from the board (more below).

3. Finding 2: only one card says it interrupts “that attack”

This is the point worth dwelling on.

Six Supports carry the [During Your Opponent’s Attack] header. But only Shikamaru Nara (N-008) — Shadow Possession Jutsu — has text that refers to the attack itself.

[During Your Opponent’s Attack] Summon this card and interrupt that attack.

Sorted by what they actually do, the six look like this:

CardCostFamily of effect
N-008Shikamaru Nara N-0081Interrupt the attack (and summon itself)
N-006Jiraiya N-0062K.O. up to 2 rested Characters
Orochimaru2K.O. up to 2 rested Characters
Hinata Hyuga1K.O. 1 non-EX Character
Sakura Haruno1Return 1 Character to its owner’s hand
N-010Karin N-0101Summon itself and gain 2 Life
What the six [During Your Opponent's Attack] Supports do
  • K.O. (remove from the board) 3cards(50%)
  • Interrupt the attack 1cards(17%)
  • Return to hand 1cards(17%)
  • Gain Life 1cards(17%)

In other words, “can be played during your opponent’s attack” and “can stop your opponent’s attack” are not the same thing.

If you K.O. the attacking Character with Hinata Hyuga, what happens to that attack has never been explained officially. Does the attack vanish with the attacker, or does the damage still land? The card text does not say. If Shikamaru turns out to be the only guaranteed stop, then “interrupt that attack” is a one-of-a-kind effect among everything revealed so far.

Note also that none of the six say “your” or “your opponent’s” in the target line. As covered in Reading effect text by scope, that wording lets you choose your own Characters too.

4. Finding 3: attacking is only rewarded on one card

Jugo (N-019) is the only revealed card with [When Attacking].

[When Attacking] Reveal the top card of your deck, and if the revealed card is “Sasuke Uchiha”, or a {The Taka} type card other than an EX Character, summon that card.

Attacking pays off in something other than damage on exactly one card, and the payoff is a heavy one — a free body on the board. It attacks and develops at the same time.

Jugo also carries the highest power on any revealed non-EX Character, 9 (see every confirmed Character stat line), so it works as both attacker and enabler. How to stack the odds on that reveal is covered in the fight over the top of your deck.

Put the other way round: not one of the remaining 11 cards reacts to an attack connecting. On current evidence, the reward for attacking is Life damage and essentially nothing else.

5. Finding 4: the one pre-emptive lock is Itachi — and it is a coin flip

Only Itachi Uchiha (N-013) uses the phrasing “cannot attack.”

[On Summon] Choose 1 Leader or Character: Reveal the top card of your deck, and if the revealed card has the {Uchiha Clan} type, the selected card cannot attack during your opponent’s next turn.

Two things set it apart from the other eleven.

First, it is the only card that acts before an attack exists. The six Supports interrupt after an attack is declared; Itachi is played on your own turn and restricts your opponent’s turn in advance.

Second, it is not guaranteed. Miss the {Uchiha Clan} reveal and the chosen card attacks as normal. The only attack lock revealed so far depends on a deck flip.

The phrase “1 Leader or Character,” as discussed in reading effect text by duration, reads as though Leaders can be attackers too — both Leader cards do carry DMG 1 / POW 3 on the card face. Whether Leaders can actually attack has still not been stated officially.

6. Finding 5: two defenders add a body to the board while being attacked

One more pattern emerges from the six Supports: self-summoning.

Shikamaru Nara (N-008) and Karin (N-010) both begin with “Summon this card and…” — a Support played from the face-down row that stays on the board as a Character.

  • Shikamaru: interrupts the attack, and leaves a DMG 1 / POW 6 / HP 4 body behind
  • Karin: gains 2 Life, and leaves a DMG 1 / POW 4 / HP 6 body behind

The defender thickens their board while under attack. From the attacker’s seat, that is a double loss: a face-down card is spent, and the opposing board grows by one.

The full picture of how Characters reach the field is in every summon route, mapped.

7. What we still do not know

Attacking is one of the largest blank areas in everything revealed so far.

  • The attack resolution procedure. What you declare an attack against, whether a blocking or guarding step exists, and the order in which interrupts resolve — none of it has been announced
  • Where DMG, POW, and HP are used during an attack. Three stats appear on the card face, but which one reduces a Leader’s Life and which governs Character-versus-Character combat has never been explained (see the Life 15 article)
  • Whether a K.O. or a bounce stops an attack. What becomes of an attack when the attacker leaves the board is unconfirmed
  • Whether attacking rests a Character. Jiraiya and Orochimaru both target “rested Characters,” which hints at a connection — but nothing official says so
  • How many attacks a turn allows, and whether several Characters can attack at once
  • Whether a Leader can attack. Itachi’s text implies it; no rule text confirms it

Summary

  • The word “attack” appears on 12 of the 38 revealed entries: five that help the attacker, seven used by the defender. The defensive side is the majority
  • Of the six [During Your Opponent’s Attack] Supports, only Shikamaru Nara (N-008) says it interrupts “that attack.” The other five are three K.O.s, one bounce, and one Life gain — none of which state that the attack stops
  • Attacking itself is rewarded on exactly one card, Jugo (N-019) and its [When Attacking] trigger
  • The only pre-emptive lock is Itachi Uchiha (N-013), and it has to hit an {Uchiha Clan} card off the top of the deck
  • Shikamaru and Karin stay on the board as Characters, letting the defender grow their board while being attacked
