Only 4 Cards Mention the Trash — All of Them EX Characters. They Place 6 Cards There, but Only 2 Say They Can Take Anything Back

This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.

For anyone who has played a Bandai card game, the trash is simply “where used cards go.” The official playmat handed out at Gen Con 2026 has a TRASH box on it, so we know the zone exists in the NARUTO Card Game too.

But how do the revealed cards actually use it? We searched all 38 entries in our card database for the word “trash.” The answer is 4 cards — and those 4 line up exactly with the 4 confirmed EX Characters.

Scope of this article: The counts below come from the 38 entries registered in our card database. Sources are the sample card images on the official “About the NARUTO Card Game” page, the official playmat distributed at Gen Con 2026, and scans of the English-language demo cards distributed at Gen Con 2026 (SAMPLE watermark, NOT FOR SALE marking); each card page lists its own source URL. The official rulebook is unpublished, so the formal definition of the trash and the rules for moving cards in and out of it have not been announced. Demo card specifications may differ from the retail release. Where we speculate, we say so explicitly.

1. Four cards mention the trash — and all four are EX Characters

Searching the 24 entries with readable effect text for “trash” returns 4 cards.

  • Naruto Uzumaki N-003 (Character, SR / DMG 3 / POW 11 / HP 10)
Cannot be summoned normally. / [Summon Requirements] Place 1 of your Characters and 1 of your Characters with 10 or more power in your trash. / [Rush] / [On Summon] Summon up to 1 [Naruto Uzumaki] from your deck or trash with its effects negated.
  • Gamabunta N-005 (Character, C / DMG 2 / POW 10 / HP 8)
Cannot be summoned normally. / [Summon Requirements] Place 1 of your Characters with 10 or more power in your trash. / [On Summon] Summon 1 non-EX [Naruto Uzumaki], [Jiraiya], or [Minato Namikaze] Character from your trash.
  • Sasuke Uchiha N-014 (Character, SR / DMG 3 / POW 10 / HP 11)
Cannot be summoned normally. / [Summon Requirements] Place 1 of your Characters and 1 of your {The Taka} type Characters in your trash. / [Rush] / [On Summon] Choose 1 Character: K.O. the chosen card.
  • Manda N-022 (Character, R / DMG 2 / POW 8 / HP 10)
Cannot be summoned normally. / [Summon Requirements] Place 1 of your Characters in your trash. / [On Summon] Reveal the top card of your deck, and if the revealed card is a non-EX Character, summon that card.

All four share two features: the opening line “Cannot be summoned normally” and a [Summon Requirements] clause. In other words, these are precisely the four EX Characters. Since those four are the only EX Characters revealed so far, “cards that mention the trash” and “EX Characters” currently overlap 100%.

Put the other way around: the other 20 entries — the two Leaders, the ordinary Characters, the Chakra Card (C-001), the Summon Card (S-001) — never use the word once.

2. Finding 1: 6 Characters go in, only 2 cards say anything comes out

Add up what the four place as [Summon Requirements] and you get 6 Characters.

Characters placed in the trash by [Summon Requirements] (4 revealed EX Characters)
Naruto Uzumaki N-003 1 needs 10+ power2cards
Sasuke Uchiha N-014 1 needs {The Taka}2cards
Gamabunta N-005 10+ power1cards
Manda N-022 no restriction1cards

On the other side, only N-003 and N-005 say they summon something out of the trash — and the two are not worded the same way.

  • N-005 reads “from your trash” — the trash and nothing else.
  • N-003 reads “from your deck or trash” — the deck is also an option, so it is not trash-exclusive.

So the only revealed card that names the trash exclusively as a place to bring Characters back from is Gamabunta (N-005). N-014 and N-022 only put cards in; they take nothing out.

That asymmetry — 6 cards in as payment, at most 2 back out — suggests the trash is designed as a mostly one-way destination rather than a revolving door. (With the caveat that this is only what four cards show us.)

3. Finding 2: Both cards that recover from the trash name “Naruto Uzumaki”

The two recovery effects are also specific about what they can bring back.

  • N-003 returns up to 1 [Naruto Uzumaki] (summoned with its effects negated)
  • N-005 returns 1 [Naruto Uzumaki], [Jiraiya], or [Minato Namikaze] (non-EX only)

Both name cards directly, and both include [Naruto Uzumaki]. As covered in our article on traits, only two traits — {Uchiha Clan} and {The Taka} — are referenced by name in any revealed effect; everything else keys off card names. Trash recovery is no exception.

The three cards N-005 names are all registered: Jiraiya N-006 (POW 7), Minato Namikaze N-007 (POW 8) and Naruto Uzumaki N-004 (POW 5). Note, though, that N-005’s [Summon Requirements] demand a Character with 10 or more power, so what you place and what you retrieve are generally different cards. This is not a design where the card you paid comes straight back.

4. Finding 3: No card touches the opponent’s trash

The count also makes one thing unambiguous: every reference is to your own trash.

  • Cards that reference, recover from, or exile the opponent’s trash: 0
  • Cards that make the opponent place a card in the trash: 0 (there are K.O. effects, but they do not state a destination — see below)
  • Cards that return something from the trash to hand: 0
  • Cards that return something from the trash to the deck: 0

The only destination written anywhere is the field. That lines up exactly with our article on how “your” is used: payments and zones always carry “your,” while effects that choose Characters on the field do not. In all four trash cards, the trash is always “your trash.”

5. Finding 4: Not one card says a K.O.‘d card goes to the trash

This is the largest blank space we found.

As counted in our article on removal, the revealed pool contains 6 K.O. effects — “K.O. the chosen card,” “K.O. all Characters,” and so on. And yet not a single card states that a K.O.‘d card is placed in the trash.

  • The only trash placements printed anywhere are the [Summon Requirements] on the four EX Characters, where you place your own cards
  • Where a card goes when it leaves the field via K.O., an attack, or end of turn is not written on any card face

By TCG convention, “K.O.‘d Characters go to the trash” is almost certainly correct, and the TRASH box on the official playmat supports that reading. But that is inference, not an announced fact.

The blank matters in situations like these (all of which rest on an unconfirmed premise):

  • If a Rasengan from Naruto Uzumaki N-004 or a Chidori from Sasuke Uchiha K.O.s all Characters and they pile into the trash, the stock of “Characters with 10 or more power” that N-003 and N-005 need suddenly grows
  • If K.O.‘d cards instead go to the Exclusion Area, mass removal becomes a way to shut those recovery routes down

Which way it falls changes the entire route to putting an EX Character on the board. It is one of the first things to check once the rulebook is published.

6. Reordering by board count — how much comes back for what you paid

Assuming the Characters placed by [Summon Requirements] come from the field, here is how your board count moves when each EX Character arrives.

Summoning an EX Character (order as printed on the card)
  1. Meet [Summon Requirements]place 1-2 of your Characters in the trash
  2. The EX Character arrivesboard +1
  3. [On Summon] triggersN-003, N-005 and N-022 add another summon here
  • Gamabunta (N-005): −1 → +1 (itself) → +1 (from the trash) = net +1. The only revealed EX that nets a gain
  • Naruto Uzumaki (N-003): −2 → +1 → up to +1 = net ±0 (it says “up to 1,” so with no valid target it is −1)
  • Manda (N-022): −1 → +1 → +1 if the top of your deck is a non-EX Character = ±0 to +1, a coin flip on your deck top
  • Sasuke Uchiha (N-014): −2 → +1 = net −1, but its [On Summon] K.O.s one of the opponent’s Characters

Because the cost is your own Characters rather than Chakra, EX Characters generally arrive by shrinking your board. That N-005 is the one exception is a surprising place to find a Common — and it points the same direction as the “C outperforms R on average” pattern we found in the rarity analysis.

An important caveat: the numbers above assume the “your Characters” placed by [Summon Requirements] are cards on the field. The card text only says “Place 1 of your Characters in your trash,” and whether Characters in hand qualify has not been announced. If they do, the board math is completely different.

7. What is still unknown

  • Where cards go when they leave the field via K.O., after attacking, or at end of turn. Zero cards state the trash as the destination
  • Which zone the “your Characters” placed by [Summon Requirements] come from — field only, or hand as well
  • Whether the trash is a public zone. The playmat has a box for it, but whether both players may inspect its contents is unannounced
  • Whether trash order is preserved (i.e. whether any effect references the “top” card of the trash)
  • Where a Support card goes after it resolves. The two [Quick] cards in our face-down Support article summon themselves to the field, but Supports that do not summon have no stated destination
  • What happens to spent Chakra. The Chakra Card (C-001) is only “turned face-down” and never goes to the trash — as covered in the rest analysis, state tracking runs on two separate systems

Summary

  • Only 4 of the 38 revealed entries mention the trash in their effect text. All four carry “Cannot be summoned normally” plus [Summon Requirements] — they are exactly the four confirmed EX Characters
  • They place a combined 6 Characters there as payment, while only 2 cards summon anything back — and only Gamabunta (N-005) names the trash exclusively. The other (N-003) reads “from your deck or trash”
  • Both recovery effects name [Naruto Uzumaki] directly, following the familiar pattern of keying off card names rather than traits
  • No card touches the opponent’s trash, and none returns a card to hand or deck — the field is the only destination written
  • Not one card says a K.O.‘d card is placed in the trash. It looks obvious by TCG convention, but it has not been stated officially
