Jugo (N-019) Is the Only Known Card With [When Attacking] — The Narrowest Hit Condition of the Three, and the Only Card That Can Stack It Sits in the Leader Slot
This article is commentary and analysis by this site. To keep it distinct from official facts, reasoning and speculation are clearly labeled.
This is the 13th article in our single-card analysis series. Today we read Jugo (N-019).
This card turned up in our August 10 article on cards that reveal the top of the deck, in our September 2 article on cards that say “if”, and in yesterday’s read of Manda (N-022). Always as “one of three” — never as the subject.
Read head-on, Jugo is the only known card whose board grows while it swings.
About this article: Jugo’s card face comes from high-resolution scan images of the English demo card handed out at Gen Con 2026, posted by an X user. Neither the official website nor the official X account has published this card face or Japanese-language text. The effect text here follows the wording of previously revealed cards as our own reference rendering. Because the source is not an official one, this article does not include a quoted card image. All counts are taken from the 38 entries in our card database (24 with readable effect text, 20 Characters with readable stats). The official rulebook and card list are still unpublished, and we clearly separate speculation from confirmed fact.
1. Reading the card face
| Item | Printed |
|---|---|
| Card name | Jugo |
| Card number | N-019 |
| Card type | Character |
| Rarity | C |
| Chakra cost | Unreadable (not confirmable from the images) |
| DMG | 2 |
| POW | 9 |
| HP | 7 |
| Types | Special / The Taka |
The effect text is one line.
[When Attacking] Reveal the top card of your deck, and if the revealed card is “Sasuke Uchiha”, or {The Taka} type card other than an EX Character, summon that card.
One line — carrying three separate things that are unique among known cards. Let us take them in order.
2. Unique #1 — only Jugo has [When Attacking]
Our keyword reference sorts eight notations under “timing”. Count how many of the 24 cards with readable text carry each of them.
Only two notations sit at a single card: [Your Turn] on Minato Namikaze (N-007), which we read yesterday, and [When Attacking] on Jugo.
What stands out is that two notations involve attacking, and their counts are wildly lopsided.
| Notation | Cards | Side of the table |
|---|---|---|
| [During Your Opponent’s Attack] | 6 | Being attacked (reacting from the face-down zone) |
| [When Attacking] | 1 | Attacking (moving on your own swing) |
Our August 23 count of cards that mention attacking found “7 of 12 are on the receiving end”. Jugo is the only card standing on the swinging side of that asymmetry.
Most known cards come out of the face-down zone to punish an attack. Jugo alone moves because he attacks.
3. Unique #2 — a condition that checks both a name and a type
Next, how the condition is written. Known texts reference other cards in two ways.
- Quoting a card name — N-003 / N-005 / N-011 / N-019, four cards (per the August 28 article)
- Referencing a type in curly braces — N-013 / N-014 / N-019, three cards
Jugo is the only card that uses both inside the same condition.
if the revealed card is “Sasuke Uchiha”, or {The Taka} type card other than an EX Character
Three clauses. As compared in yesterday’s Manda article, that makes the narrowest hit condition among the three deck-top cards.
| Card | Hit condition | Clauses | Payoff on a hit |
|---|---|---|---|
| N-022Manda N-022 | A non-EX Character | 1 | Summon that card |
| N-013Itachi Uchiha N-013 | Has the {Uchiha Clan} type | 1 | The chosen card cannot attack during the opponent’s next turn |
| Jugo N-019 | “Sasuke Uchiha” or {The Taka}, and not an EX Character | 3 | Summon that card |
So what actually hits? Among the 38 known entries, these could satisfy it:
- Karin N-010 ({Special} {The Taka})
- Suigetsu Hozuki N-021 ({Water} {The Taka})
- Jugo himself ({Special} {The Taka})
- Chidori Sasuke Uchiha and the artwork version of Sasuke Uchiha, both named “Sasuke Uchiha”
What misses is just as clear. EX Sasuke N-014 has {The Taka} but is thrown out by “other than an EX Character”, and Sasuke Uchiha Leader N-012 has {The Taka} yet is a Leader card and never sits in the deck.
In other words, Jugo’s hit only works in a high-purity deck built from {The Taka} Characters and cards named “Sasuke Uchiha”. The payoff for that narrowness is the next section.
4. The payoff — a board that grows while you swing
On a hit: “summon that card.” Word for word what Manda does.
The difference is timing. Manda’s is [On Summon] — once, when it arrives. Jugo’s is [When Attacking] — written to fire each time he attacks.
Four known effects say “summon that card” (N-003 / N-005 / N-019 / N-022), but only Jugo’s is bolted to the act of attacking.
As our August 6 article on summoning routes set out, the known ways a Character reaches the field are “use the Appearance Card S-001”, “pay Chakra from hand (apparently)”, and “put out by an effect”. Jugo’s single line attaches that third route to an ordinary attack.
Speculation from here: DMG 2 / POW 9 sits in the upper band of our full stat overview. He swings to push damage through and — since the text says only “when attacking”, regardless of what the attack achieves — reveals the top of the deck anyway. It reads like one action doing two jobs. But with combat resolution unannounced, we do not know how this effect is handled if the attack is stopped.
Unconfirmed: Whether a Character put out this way can attack is also unannounced. As organized in our [Rush] article, the reminder text on Ino Yamanaka (N-011) — “(This card can attack on the turn in which it is summoned.)” — implies that Characters normally cannot attack on the turn they arrive. Whether Jugo’s summon can swing immediately therefore depends on it having [Rush].
5. Unique #3 — the card that stacks his hit sits in the Leader slot
This is the most interesting thing about Jugo.
As confirmed on August 10, only one known card can place a card on top of your own deck — the Activate: Main on Sasuke Uchiha Leader (N-012).
[Activate: Main] [Once Per Turn] Draw 1 card and place 1 card from your hand on top of your deck.
Draw, put back. Your hand size does not grow. But it does mean you choose the next card to be revealed, every turn.
And Jugo’s hit condition is “‘Sasuke Uchiha’ or {The Taka}”. N-012 is named “Sasuke Uchiha” and carries {The Taka}. Same package.
{The Taka} is not the largest known type — {Hidden Leaf Village} has 20 and {Special} has 15 — but it is the only group where a Leader, Characters, an EX, a reveal condition and a Summon Requirement all connect in one chain. EX Sasuke N-014 also requires “1 of your {The Taka} type Characters” placed in the trash.
- The Leader (N-012) stacks the top of the deck
- Jugo (N-019) reveals it mid-attack and puts it on the field
- The {The Taka} Character that arrives becomes the payment for EX Sasuke (N-014)
No other known type runs a line this far. Our Gen Con demo deck read noted that “type density is what supports the EX Summon Requirements” — Jugo sits at the exact centre of that line.
Unconfirmed: That said, whether Activate: Main can be used before attacking is not confirmable, because it has not been announced where in the 4-phase turn attacks happen. The name “Main” suggests activation during a main phase, but until we know whether attacking happens inside that phase or a different one, “stack, then swing” cannot be asserted.
6. The tension between power 9 and rarity C
Finally the numbers. Here is the power spread across the 16 known non-EX Characters.
Power 9 is the outright highest among non-EX Characters. Since Manda (N-022) of the four EX Characters has power 8, Jugo ranks fourth across all 20 Characters, EX included.
And his rarity is C. Of the 18 cards whose rarity is readable, 5 are C (N-005 / N-008 / N-011 / N-019 / N-021) — a group that includes the EX Character Gamabunta (N-005).
Rarity does not track the strength of the printed numbers.
Jugo alone makes concrete what our August 17 rarity count concluded when it found that the average for C came out above R. Put beside the cost-2, SR-rarity Orochimaru at power 4, the natural reading is that rarity signals how hard a card is to obtain, not how strong it is — though with the product line-up unannounced, we cannot even confirm that C really is easier to obtain.
Unconfirmed: The Chakra cost box is unreadable. As our cost article covers, only 12 known cards have a readable cost; among Characters, N-007 / N-011 / N-013 / N-019 cannot be confirmed from the images. Until we know what power 9 costs, we cannot judge whether this card is strong.
7. What we still do not know
- The Chakra cost (one of the four unreadable ones)
- How [When Attacking] is handled when the attack is stopped (its ordering against Shikamaru Nara N-008 and “interrupt that attack”)
- Whether a Character summoned this way can attack that turn
- Whether Activate: Main can be used before attacking (the phase in which attacks happen is unannounced)
- Where a missed reveal goes (no known card writes an alternative outcome)
- The composition of a 50-card deck (so no hit probability can be calculated)
- The Japanese card name and effect text (only the English demo card has been confirmed)
All of these wait on the official rulebook and card list. We will update the card database page and this article as they are revealed.
Summary
- Jugo (N-019) is a Character card, rarity C: DMG 2 / POW 9 / HP 7, types {Special} {The Taka}. The Chakra cost box is unreadable
- Jugo is the only known card with [When Attacking]. Notations about attacking run 6 cards for [During Your Opponent’s Attack] against 1 for [When Attacking] — the only card standing on the swinging side
- Among the three deck-top cards his hit condition is the narrowest (three clauses), and he is the only card writing both a name and a type into one condition
- The one known way to stack that narrow hit is the Activate: Main on Sasuke Uchiha Leader (N-012) — the only known card that can place a card on top of the deck
- {The Taka} is the only group where a Leader, Characters, an EX Summon Requirement and a reveal condition connect in one chain, and Jugo sits at its centre
- Power 9 is the outright highest among non-EX Characters, printed at rarity C — rarity does not track the printed numbers
